Reply:seems like some guys here can get them pretty easy. Not so much around here. Its big trouble if you try and scrap anything RR related.- Christian M.C3 Welding & Fabrication - CNC Plasma Cutting-Mobile Welding-Custom welding and fabwww.c3welding.com
Reply:theres gota be some rr tracks you can cut a section out of...lol..the way amtrak is going they need something to blame all there derailments on......but seriously  you can look in the scrap yards or if you know someone that works for the RR can get you a piece...Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...
Reply:I know a guy who works for a rail company (after many mergers, I couldn't tell you which one at this point). He's a senior employee on track maintenance and says it's nearly impossible to get used track legally. The quality of the steel is the issue. It may also be that the RR company does the steel recycling to make new tracks. I'll ask him the next time I see him, but he said it would be really difficult to get me a piece.Lincoln Precision Tig 185Lincoln Power Mig 256Hypertherm PM 45Everlast 140STSmith O/A
Reply:Around here scrap yards won't take RR track. Tough to find around here.
Reply:I have a 5 ft section upstate in my barn......I guess ill have to keep a protective eye on it...Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...
Reply:Is railroad track hardened all the way thru???
Reply:http://www.akrailroad.comTry calling this place, if they have a location near you. When I was on the chitcago Blue Line project, I hauled the old track to the Gary, IN location. They sell old ties, so they just might sell/give a short chunk of rail. The guy's were pretty cool there."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:Just as a counterpoint, around these parts obtaining a section of rail would be no more problem than heading down to the railroad scrap pile or over to the nearby Pacific Iron & Steel scrapyard. The railroad looks upon 'spent' rail as a nuisance they have to pay union labor to gather up with a payback at the lowest bulk rate for oversized steel due to the lengthy sections needing to be cut down or sheared in order to be transported out of the area for either shipment to overseas or domestic steel mills for recycling. As far as asking a maintenance supervisor for rail...probably would get the same answer as the poster above unless a 12-pack of beer was offered and then more 'legal' rail than I would ever want would suddenly become available. Why?...134 lb. rail is a pain in the rear for them to lug home for a buddy.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.
Reply:We more than likely have a chunk or 2 at the shop I can send ya....Let me look around tomorrow and I will get back to you....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:You are close enough- Franklin Industries in Franklin Pa -buys scrap rail by the mile literally. They have mountains of cropped rail-of various lengths. They use it to make Farm and Road sign posts. I'd bet if you took a drive up there and asked you'd be able to get what you want. As has been mentioned you won't find it in most scrap yards. In fact most 'junk yards' will call the police if you show up with RR related 'scrap' due to it most likely being stolen. Hope that helps
Reply:I too was wondering where I might acquire a piece of RR Track?
Reply:You might try calling local demolition/dismantling contractors. A lot of heavy industrial places such as steel suppliers or foundries have in-house rail systems.TOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE

Reply:Railroad R/W is pretty well cleaned up around here now days. Used to be a lot of misc scraps to be easily had. Not anymore. They use a big electro magnet off a utility car to sweep it all up. Doesn't miss as much as a nail. If it did miss anything the scrappers would have it before the sun came up. You could throw some bed springs out along the road now and they wouldn't last two days. He11, they steal aluminum ladders off the back of work trucks and head right straight to the scrap yard with them."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:if you were anywhere near me i could gets you miles of it. its laying around all over the place. in the weeds, behind old buildings, in scrap bins
