Threaded section removed, and ground for full penetration weld.  Round stock is slightly smaller in diameter than forging/casting/whatever..........so it has to be blended.
Reply:So, how did you get the old one off?  Enquiring minds want to know.
Reply:Nicely done simple repair.  But only simple for people with skills Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:When removing tie rods I use 2 hammers and strike the tie rod eye at opposite sides at the same time. the tie rod end wili just drop out of the eye (eye may not be the correct name) maybe receiver is better.DIY CNC Plasma table USB BOB Price THCHypertherm 65Everlast PowerTig 255 EXTMiler 180 Mig13" metal latheMill/ DrillECT, ECT,
Reply:We fixed one like that about 45 yrs ago. When we were done we laid a length of angle iron on it and welded it from end to end for extra strength. Wasn't pretty, but it was still intact when the tractor went down the road 2 yrs ago. And yea... did you get it apart without burning the yard down?250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes
Reply:Had to make another round stock fixture real fast this morning.  The other one I usually use was too long, and the tie rod didn't sit right in it when ready to add the second end.  Notice how small the welds are?  Just enough to hold it securely without causing to warp out of shape.  Sometimes less is betterGlued the other end on, and she's ready to slap on the tractor.
Reply:Loaded the Uranus #8 Carryall, and headed out to burn down the countryside  The carryall will clear the drawbar so you can use it for hooking a chain to.  Me to K'kins........."Ok babe, LET'S BREAK SOMETHIN'"  Another chain forms a bridle on each side of the axle to spread the force.  THEN IT'S OFF TO THE RACES!!!!!!!!  K'kins is trying to stay out of the way...........in her thermal underwear, pair of pants, and bib overalls  (she definitely stayed warm)  It actually isn't as bad as it looks..........there's a ton of hay mixed with the dirt, so it isn't all that dense.  Once it was out of the bad area, I just switched ends, and pulled it away from the big pile so we could work on it.
Reply:The piece of sheet metal was used to shield the tire from any stray slag.  Yet another surgical application of I did have a moment though.................I'm under there cutting the nut off with very gentle application of the O2 stream, so not to blow metal everywhere......and some of the grease in the tie rod end melted.......dripped down onto the torch.....ignited.......and landed on my arm  I saw visions of burning up my best overalls..................the ones with more holes than fabric (see......this is a pretty regular thing)  Honestly......it did scare daylights out of me.  It was like a vaporized explosion sorta.  Used the handy dandy Uranus Magic Pedestal, and jacked 'er up so the wheel would move, and put the tie rod on.Moved some feeders, fed the cows, then the both of us crawled back to the house exhausted.BTW.................I figured I'd be off a bit on the tie rod length.  Well,, I was.......about maybe an inch.  So when I have time, I'll take it off,, and lengthen it a bit.  Some day........................  (Or, I could adjust the other side a little bit longer to remove the toe out)  (I'll have to see whether the bellcrank is centered properly before I make any judgement calls)
Reply:I was thinking about this today.  Seems like a lot of effort for small reward I guess. But, K'kins, and I, have money in the bank.  And...........we're getting older.  I have money to fool around with the market.  Not a lot of fun, but it adds to the grocery jar (it's actually a pretty serious endeavor).  She has money in the bank........saving for a newer car.  It's made possible by the little things.  Eating at home, not buying clothes, fixing stuff that can be fixed.  We're doing ok for our economic position in life.No car loans.  No mortgages.  No credit card debt.  We're doin' ok for lower middle class folks.So.....we keep on doin' this crap.  K'kins is on board with it, so that's enough for me.The    doesn't give a damn either way.....................as long as he gets his afternoon treat.  (Old glamour shot from a few years back)
Reply:He's outside now, waiting for K'kins to come home from work.  He has to be out there from about 4:00 on.  He knows when she comes home.  Some kinda pup!I get the gate treatment.  When I leave the place, he parks his butt at the gate, and sits there until I get back.  Dogs are the best part of humanity.
Reply:Did some tie rods for a big 4850 John Deere MFD a few years back, it had a big (290 I think) loader on it it and they were constantly folding up tie rod tubes. I found some heavy truck tie rod ends that fit the spindles and bellcrank... 1 left and right threaded for each side with 7/8" threads and had 2 DOM tubes threaded for them after some careful measuring. Those have never broken or bent in 10-12 years. Nice thing about MFD is the rods are a fixed length.
Reply:Why not take out a loan?
