Hey guys,We've got a great rack to store metal stock in lengths from 6'-24' but as we complete more and more projects (lots of one-offs) our pile of "rems" is growing out of control. Anything 16" or less gets tossed in milk crates but I'm wondering what kind of solutions you guys have developed for organizing stock under 6' or so. Often I spend so much time searching for a piece it would've been cheaper to just cut it from new material. I was thinking a rack with a small foot print, up against a wall. One side would be vertical storage and the other horizontal shelves for smaller pieces. Any body else facing this issue?Multimatic 215 w/ aluminum spool gunHypertherm 45 xpLincoln 140 MigMillermatic 200Alpha 200dxO/A RigEverett 22" abrasive saw

Reply:I am also looking for a solution and came across this: https://www.buildsomething.com/plans...SheetGoodsCart . I redrew to make it narrower and use some of my scrap metal to build it.  I have sheets of sheet metal and expanded metal that are a pain to store.
Reply:I made a divider for a big plastic drum I have that works pretty good for me. It's kind of sorted and not too bad to remove the pieces. Check this post too, mine is #19 , I had a bunch of unistrut cutoffs and buddy owns the store that I got the coke cases from. Helps out ; anything is better than buckets and on floor.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...terial+storage

Reply:Man that's genius. Really low cost solution and I've got some drums. I could use this for the longer sheet metal pieces too!Multimatic 215 w/ aluminum spool gunHypertherm 45 xpLincoln 140 MigMillermatic 200Alpha 200dxO/A RigEverett 22" abrasive saw
Reply:If you have so much that it is getting in the way ,pack it in batches and sell it on Craig's list.

Reply:The BEST storage system is what works for you. Here's some pics of MY haphazard storage. Please note. BEFORE any of you REAL welders out there decide to ridicule me for saving "pieces" keep in mind I am retired farmer and play in my shop "not for profit". If I had a production shop (with employees) I realize it would be CHEAPER to have them cut a piece off a full length stick than root around for and store off-cuts.

Reply:I have no idea how much material we're talking here, but this is my "random material" storage unit:

Kinda hard to see in the pictures, but it's 3 stand alone A-Frame racks. Material can rest on the outside arms, or slide inside. Each rack is a different width, ranging from 24" to 36". Anything that can't fit on the smaller rack gets tossed, unless it's exotic. Same principle would work with ONLY smaller pieces if you only used one rack. But it's nice to have at least two, then you can space the two racks as far apart as you want to allow storage for longer pieces. I originally was going to make sheet metal tops for each shelf that covered both sides and the inside of the arms if that makes sense, which would open up a lot more ways to store the material including much shorter pieces, but it was expensive and not really necessary.

I built this rack out of scrap steel. Put all of the heavy and short pieces on the bottom so that the floor carries the load. I stick welded all of the support arms to the frame and then added an angle to the under side for extra piece of mind. The welds were made using 6011 for the first pass and then 7018 for the second and third pass. I cleaned the welds with a wire cup wheel and a grinder between passes. I also ground all welded surfaces to bright metal before welding. Also cleaned a spot for the ground clamp.

Reply:Do you guys ever consider selling some of your material, your piles of odds and ends get bigger and bigger by the day. Could earn some extra cash, think about it.

Reply:Since most places in my area are only giving 2 to 3 cents a pound for scrap I hang onto everything until the prices go back up. Here some pics of some racks I built to hold rems. Except the tubing rack is for rems and full lengths as it is 20' long.

Reply:I made 5' long drawers out of purlins that slide out from under my welding table. There are 8 of them in all. You can see them behind the pet cemetery crosses in the picture. Yes, I know, I spelled Murphy wrong.

Reply:One thing I try to do is mark the length of the material left on one end with a sharpie or paint marker. That way you don't haul out 6 pieces too short before finding the right length. When i cut a piece off i make sure to cut the end with the marking off then remark it before it is shelved again. I also mark the type of material it is if it isn't mild steel.Miller 180SDLincoln weld pak 180Hobart 250ciMill Lathe

Reply:I just have a "rack" of pvc tubes standing vertically that I stick stock in, then like the OP I have milk crates for the stuff that is to short for the pvc tubes. Its a mess and I don't like it at all. I need a new system of storage as well.

12v battery, jumper cables, and a 6013.I only have a facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/pages/VPT/244788508917829

Reply:Where do you get all those wonderful toys?... Seriously you guys have more odds and ends than the shop at work... I just see all the projects I could do with them.I haven't built anything I can't throw away.  Perfection is the journey.    Mac

Reply:Been thinking about making something like this so I can move it out of the way when I need to.  The only downside is that I don't know I have the overhead clearance I'd need for a 10' bar.

Reply:This type I made with top  shelves at 10"lengthThe next at 14" length 2 shelve. One shelf at bandsaw hight 24"length and bottom shelf/base 30" length. It was after more one shelves this work. The light weight on  Top 10" length and bottom shelves was greatest weights on bottom shelves.  The bandsaw was used for bandsaw use and very heavy bars. All could take 21 foot bars and down to 6" bars. All shelves was tilled back 10° so bars will say on shelfDave
