I just LOVE these type things..

Now I smell like Chinese food...Ask mrs zap..This grinder is from the local Chinese joint and the head was just falling off because the threads were worn out..Not stripped..Just plain worn out..Of course it's made of el cheapo cast iron so 309 was used for this..Part..

Porosity!Weld..Grind..Weld...Grind..Weld...Grind..

Set up..Threads are 4"-8...

Done..

Done..

There is nothing like welding metal that has food residue inside it and when it all starts cooking..

My clothes..My hair..(Whats left)..My fingers..Smell just awful and now it's shower time..OK that's done.

I get all the fun jobs.....zap!

I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing

Reply:My dad owns the local meat packing plant. BTDT except I brazed them up and then threaded them. I've also built up the edges of the auger and turned it back down. Parts are no longer made for many of them.  Good looking job though I can't imagine how hard it was to turn after welding with stainless.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm

Reply:How 'bout a pic of the custom bit you made....?

Reply:Brilliant work as always Zap

Was it hard turning the new threads?

Reply:Did they give you the rest of the meat grinder so you could make sure it threads on fine?

Reply:Very nice repair. I feared the worst based on the title but being that it wasn't in the safety section I clicked on it. You do get all the fun jobs.

Did you anneal it before turning or just go for it?

Reply:Part probably made in China, used to prepare Chinese food, Fixed by a True American.  Probably better now than anything that could be store bought.  Good Job.
Reply:The only machine I liked fixing food related... was a peanut butter grinder. Made the whole shop smell like fresh baked cookies till the bearing was cut out off the shaft.Nice fix, looks good
Reply:LOL, Sorry Zap, that makes me laugh.  My Dad used to do alot of food service repair, and after one "extensive" job he came home with a carton of tapioca pudding!!!I gotta ask what you came home with

Reply:Nice repair!Darn, i need a lathe......and a mill...and some craftmanship
Reply:Wow! I'm on my way out of the house right now to do the same. My grinder is a bit bigger, it is a huge thing driven by 7kW engine via belts in the back. I've got 53 huskies, so we grind a lot. My threads are worn out beyond belief. Today is the day to fix it. My problem is that I don't have a lathe and anyway I can't rotate that thing anyway, so for me it will be weld a bit, file it into shape by hand and so on until it holds the head safely. The smell of baked tripe... Yuk.Last edited by kokesh; 23 Hours Ago at 04:24 AM.
