I am a hobbyist welder working on a few projects a year and sometimes going more than a year without welding. I have a Lincoln Squarewave 200 that has served me well. I am looking to add Mig to my garage but with space saving in mind I am contemplating selling the Lincoln and buying a Mig/Tig/Stick multi process unit. Anyone care to comment on the Everlast Lighting MTS 225 or offer a suggestion.
Reply:I'd save space somewhere else. The multi process units seem to fail more than the dedicated use ones.I'd surely not sell a reliable red or blue for lime green.
Reply:You have a tig/stick machine now,,,Just buy a cheap MIG off of Amazon, and see if you really need a MIG welder. If you really need MIG,,,, THEN make a decision about changing. This will cost you WAY less machine money,,,I use stick exclusively,, and I am happy. I have a MIG, but have never found the need to hook it up,,,,,,,,
Reply:I guess in my mind it depends how much aluminum welding you actually do. I am a fan of the DC only MIG/TIG/Stick machines, if they can meet all your needs. I think once you get into the realm of really requiring AC TIG capabilities, I tend to no longer favor the all in one machines...they are just too much of a compromise, and don't really have enough amps for heavier aluminum welding. The other thing I would say is that I too am a hobby welder, and 99.9% of what I weld gets done with MIG. Truth be told, the Multimatic 255 is WAY more welder than what I need (but what the heck, right?

). I could honestly probably be happy if I only had a 200 amp MIG welder. So I guess the real question for you is how much do you really need to use the TIG function and how much aluminum do you do? If I was on the market for a less expensive machine I would be looking at the Primeweld units, either the 180 amp MIG for $550 or the multiprocess unit for $750Miller Multimatic 255

Reply:Some of the Esab/Firepower machines are priced very reasonably.
