I have to replace 33 cross members on a 53’ traveling axle trailer and I need to know if i cutout the coss member figure on one of the sides to slide in the new one as a whole piece will it affect the structural integrity of the frame. How much should I charge to do that and replace all the wood deck also and paint in california.

Reply:We have no idea what your abilities are or how certified you are at tackling such a project that can lead to the possibility of loss of life.  Ask your insurance company if they will cover you for the job and take it from there and contact the maker of the trailer to find out what material the trailer is made out of so you can match it and use the proper filler material and procedures.  Wood and paint is easy but welding cross beams in the trailer could be potential for major Law Suit.Lincoln, ESAB, Thermal Dynamics, Victor, Miller, Dewalt, Makita, Kalamzoo.  Hand tools, power tools, welding and cutting tools.

Reply:53' trailer with wood deck ? If the crossmembers are that bad, junk it and buy another. I'm sure that's just the beginning. Some of these can carry 40 tons which is more than a 6'x10' bumper hitch one. With the cost of materials today, your experience, forget it. OR have a real trailer repair shop look at it or show them photos. They'll give you a price and their opinion. I say walk away from it, your insurance carrier will be happy.
Reply:Watch the YouTube videos of truck frames being strengthened,, in Pakistan. The all do it the same way,, form a channel that will fit inside the existing channel member, then rivet it in place.(sometimes, they weld, but, mostly rivet,,)
Reply:I'm not real familiar with landoll lowboy trailers but I've replaced cross members on other makes. Generally you have 2 heavy fabricated beams about 3' apart with I shaped holes cut for the crossmember beams to slide thru. There is typically little to no weld at that point. You then have your 2 outer channel rails fully welded to the cross beams. Strip decking, cut the rail off on one side making sure you have plenty of working room to remove and slide in new beams. Keep in mind that there is wiring, air plumbing, air tanks, and air valves that are most likely mounted on the beams or in the way. Valves most likely are corroded and will be an issue. All of that is probably more time consuming than replacing the beams. As for how much to charge, that's your job to figure out. I personally believe that if you want to do work for profit you should be able to do your own legwork.

Reply:I have done this and it isn’t for the faint at heart might as well pull the wiring out and pull the deck off then you will see those crossmembers aren’t channel iron you have to have them bent and like the all have said air lines air valves air tanks then your gonna find the crossmembers around the fifth wheel pin are shot so the you have to change the plate and pin then you have to buy decking and SCREWS which you had better price and find then you have to install them when you price the decking you better be sitting down If you can get some? It isn’t a two week job you better have a couple of helpers lots of crawling around And if all that is that rusted out better check your spring hangers

Done plenty of flatbeds with outside frames though.
Reply:Ya, I re read removing one side after.  It would be another weld could 2 piece them too, splice in the middle wouldn't bother me.www.urkafarms.com

Reply:Check it over to see if there are previous repairs. The biggest PITA in some of those jobs is when someone has patched things up before. If some pieces of the cross members have been scabbed in and welded to the frame, then it’s a lot more time consuming to get things taken apart. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
