Yesterday my old blue MillerMatic wasn’t happy. I was tag welding a metal frame then it started making a really loud electrical humming/buzzing noise. The fan came on and wouldn’t shut off. It was sending a small amount power to the electrode/lead (was arcing without the trigger being pulled) and the power plug/cord got really hot.. started melting the plug. Ground Clamp was pretty hot too. But didn’t trip the breaker. Obviously I shut everything down and unplugged it.. Haven't opened it up yet to look. Serial Number: JE744561 - Do y'all have any ideas what might cause this?  Is old faithful a goner? TIA Last edited by TAC1FAB; 3 Weeks Ago at 02:50 PM.

Reply:Ok thank you
Reply:I was thinking a short somewhere or a bad diode creating a shortMiller Multimatic 255
Reply:If the incoming power started smoking and didnt trip I might be concerned about the wiring?www.urkafarms.com
Reply:May have a compound cause such as a shorted weld output diode as Louie1961 stated and one or more arced closed contacts in the main contactor as shovelon mentioned.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110

Reply:I took the cover off and really didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Except for in the first photo I found a small aluminum washer on the bottom of the machine.. and the fan motor is covered with grinder dust.. I would expect that's normal. I there is a repair shop fairly close to me in Sacramento I'm going to take the welder to. I talked to the guy there yesterday and he said it's well worth looking into and they can get parts for repair.

Reply:Connected for 200V rather than 230?I predict one or more shorted output rectifier diodes that heated the heat sink to the point the temperature switch opened shutting the unit down.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110

Reply:I'd presume OCV (Open Circuit Voltage) for each setting would be higher than spec.  Set up for 230V will likely require getting used to a "new" machine. The resulting higher OCV may have shorted one or more of the output capacitors.  Something to investigate.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110

Reply:Check the manual for the proper use and settings for those jumpers. The sharpie scribbling of  "200"  and  "230"  don't exactly look official to me.Century buzzbox that I learned on 40+ years ago (was Dad's)Crappy Century 110volt mig 70 amp pigeon pooper.Lincoln Idealarc TIG-300
