I am building a gantry using 4" round tube for the vertical columns. and 3" round tubing for the braces/gussets. (please excuse my lack of proper nomenclature)I want to learn to make perfect joints for this project, both the mitered angles and the coping. Does anyone know of a Youtube video that explains this easily? Thanks"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!

Reply:I dunno about you tube, but for years I've used the Pipefitter's Bluebook for help with that kind of stuff. Sometimes when you do the layouts you're thinking it's crazy but it works out with just a small amount of grinding.
Reply:There are free programs that will produce templates.  There is at least one on this forum.   Online searchTube or pipe notching.  There are a couple guys on YouTube who do roll cages and explain how to do it without templates. Also, there are hole saws for making cut.  There is debate about what is perfect. Some say flush other say leave the kerf for penetration.   On furnitureI often finish flush abs braze, on most other things I leave the kerf.  Kerf leaves less cleanup since the weld is deeper.
Reply:There are various types of gantry designs. A photo of your design would definitely help see what type of miters or copes are required. This is probably the most used and helpful tool IF you are mitering or coping both ends. It's a Jackson center finder. https://www.amazon.com/Jackson-Safet...7-93deae8f9840

Reply:I hate that stuff but can get by for structural work,  I even copy and usually make a pattern from cardboard.  I was trying to find pic of this joint.

Reply:This is the design I am thinking of. Yes BD1 I have a center finder, and pipe wraps, however I mostly work on heavy equipment so I have not had the time to play with them yet. And 12V71, I do have the fitters book, again haven't looked at it much. It seemed to be more of a reference than instructional, but I may be wrong on that. Tapwelder, I will search that.I have 20' of 4" for the two 10' verticals. I have 20' of 3" for the four 5' braces. I want this perfect, obviously because of the purpose.https://cranedepot.com/products/2-to...t-gantry-crane"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:If it needs to be perfect it's designed wrong.  None of this is critical, joints are overbuilt by a long shot and then some. It's good if the welding inspires a little confidence.  But like trailers most of it is simple col and beam, most simply sits on top.

Reply:Check this site out. https://fittertraining.com/category/...ee-branch-pdf/ they have a youtube channel Construction L&I. I think they are Indian/middle eastern. Reply:I've used online coping calculators before I learned to do it by hand. This one looks promising (first one I saw)https://www.blocklayer.com/pipe-notchPretty sure this is the one I used before though:https://www.metalgeek.com/static/cope.pcgiDave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:contour marker, is handy to have.     i got two sizes of  curv-o -matics, come w little instructional book
Reply:I have a curvomatic.  I have yet to use it.  I take it out and look at it on occasion, then the moment passes and it ends up back in the box.Stick-man you will be alright.  Seems like you might be overly concerned about perfection.  For the amount you have, it will be about good referencing and patience more than technique.  There are many techniques that will give you a workable cope.
