Last night was my first class at welding school.   No arc was struck yet, due to the need for orientation of the class members on safety, school policy, tour thru the welding lab, overview of the equipment, supply room and closets, where to put scrap steel, going over the way the course will start with stick, advance to mig, then finally tig.  If time allows, and the class is moving forward at a good enough pace, them maybe a little aluminum at the end.I saw a pallet full of 50 lb cans of 7018, and another one full of .035 metal core wire.   5 weels of stick, 4 of MIG, then TIG.   Equipment is mostly Miller, but some Lincoln there as well.  They want us to use a number of different individual machines over the course, so we get used to how to adjust and understand the peculiararities of different units.   With the money the technical college is charging, and the cost of things now-a-days, I’d say I’m getting a great value for the money spent. At the end later this year, I can get certifications too….done right in the same lab I’m learning in.   The cost is very reasonable and of course is conducted by an AWS certified inspector, who will, if one passes the test, fill out all certification records on the spot, and award the recipient with them.  I’m thinking of getting the structural and pipe/plate certs. Most of the rod we will use will be 7018, and some 6010.   My instructor has been teaching there since 2014, and is employed in the HVAC sector.   He is also a 2007 graduate from this program. The thought occurred to me that a pallet load of rod or wire is not a cheap proposition, thus my statement about value.Miller Multimatic 215Spoolmatic 150 spool gunPrimeweld Cut 60 Plasma CutterVevor Pipe StandsBauer Portaband/Swag tableGrinders-Milwaukee, Porter Cable, DewaltArcUnion M-20 portable rod oven
Reply:I found out today, when visiting the local welding supply from which the school purchases helmets, gloves & jackets, that the school gets their rods & wire directly from Lincoln, for less than what the local supplier can get them.  I would suppose that there would be tax breaks for Lincoln and others for giving to educational endeavors, and they keep expanding their customer base down the road......win/win!

Reply:Lincoln also sends charts and educational material free of charge.

Reply:Pretty cool to have all that available.  I think metal-core is pretty sweet if you have the proper gas mix to run it;  it goes right into spray/pulsed-spray at lower overall levels than gas-shielded flux core and especially than solid wire.  Not only that, based on what I saw on YouTube from robotic automated structural steel companies that are small-medium size, they typically run metal-core wire as it handles millscale/rust/surface oxides much better than other types of wire.  Not presenting it as global fact, just what I personally gather as a common denominator in some of those videos.
