So I wanna make a fuel cell about 10-12 gallons. It will be made of 1/8” aluminum. I think it’s 5052 that I have. Hoping I can get some help on how many gallons these dimensions come out too? It will fit the front of the boat well this way

so the tank will be 1’ tall. And not sure if I’m going to add the 5” sides at the back. Just a triangle may be enough. Thanks! I plane on building it this week. Planing on using rubber grommets for the bottom and Tieing it down to secure it and wanna add a net possibly to it on the front and weld on mount for fire extinguishers holder on it and rod holders and let it be a seat

this was on the Columbia today

Reply:I made one for a guy for a bigger boat. I think it worked out to around 24 gallons in the one I made.  Easier to figure the amount if you figure it more square instead of all the extra angles.

12v battery, jumper cables, and a 6013.I only have a facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/pages/VPT/244788508917829
Reply:Nice vpt! That right about what I wanna make. Did u put any baffling inside? What did u use for a vent and fuel cap?
Reply:I did baffle from side to side. The vent is in the cap, the cap was mounted to the boat and a rubber hose runs from the tank to the cap. I think the cap was a simple motorcycle cap or the like from an auto parts store (or possibly ordered off line) came with the matching neck for the cap too.The hole in the top was for a sending unit which was a cheapy bought of the net as well. The owner put the tank at the front of the boat obviously, the twin batteries right behind it and a seat/deck over the whole deal.12v battery, jumper cables, and a 6013.I only have a facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/pages/VPT/244788508917829
Reply:I was thinking about doing a clear hose from the top to bottom to see fuel level. I like the dirt bike style with hose hanging down. I’ve seen some with breather holes under the outside edge of the cap where u grip it with your finger but little closer in. I might even make a cap on the lathe. Haven’t done much lathe projects lately. I’ll  go check the auto parts store or online also

I like this style. I could get the tension perfect on the honing machine.Did u weld the inside?

Reply:That is for the one with the 3 inch nose, 13 inch side, 5 inch side and 22.5 back that is 12 inches tall.Mike
Reply:Ok that would be the bigger one. Wow I’m surprised it’s only that big. Thanks again! With that one I could still lay down in it

Reply:I set the motor up for a video to do wheelies. I’ve figured out how to work the motor now and let it set free in shallow spots. First day I had no idea and it was getting dark. I can get it to plane really fast now

Reply:No not at all. I was doing it on purpose. He did even a bigger one the first day because the fuel tank was in the back. I’ve got it in the front now. That was little scary. I though the boat was going to flip lol. I could only get it to like 5mph if that first day
Reply:I am envious but only because my boat is nit running

Reply:I was going to post a picture but my phone died while I was out there messing with the trailer.  It is an 18.6” Charger Bass Boat practically identical to a champion bass boat.  Charger did a few things different on their boats like looping the live well circulation around the ice chest to keep the live wells cool for happy fish. Here is a video of me releasing a couble black bass here in Stockton on the Delta.  They were stored in the driver side live well.  Fish kept poking me with their dorsal fins thats why I was owing so much.Last edited by N2 Welding; 09-04-2018 at 02:20 AM.Lincoln, ESAB, Thermal Dynamics, Victor, Miller, Dewalt, Makita, Kalamzoo.  Hand tools, power tools, welding and cutting tools.
Reply:Just an FYI. Anyone making fuel tanks for boats might want to search for the coast guard regulations governing fuel tanks, especially if you are building one for a customer. They don't allow fittings anywhere in the tank except the top and the manufacturer is supposed to be certified. I think built in tanks are also supposed to be in the back half of the boat. Could be a liability if there was ever problem with a customer's tank.
Reply:Here ya go Moto, this is a better shot of my truck/boat combo and the neighbors dry yard across the street when I was renting back in '2010 oh and the 1998 Regal GS I sold to my ex when we split up.

Reply:Moto, what size motor is on that boat? I may have missed it but it looks fair sized. At one time I had a 10 foot inflatable with a 10hp Johnson that I used as a tender for a larger boat. The inflatable was rated for the engine but it was still way too much power and the engine was heavy as hell. A 5-8hp would have been ideal.  Riding wise, I don't believe you'll get too much relief with the fuel tank in the bow.

Reply:Ok I’ll put it on the top like it is now on my plastic tank. I just gota figure out the thread on the cap that hold the fuel line connection. I’ll just buy a new cap and it actually has a fuel gauge on top. So I can make the male part on the lathe and weld it on

third hand came in handy

Can they roller skate any? Knowing that helped me greatly. I tried skiing one summer, but not too great, but over the winter I learned how to roller skate, and the next summer I got up and did great. I guess it was from learning how to control my feet and legs with something slipping around under them.

Reply:I think I’ll just use a boat tank cap since they have the fuel line connection on the cap but thanks for the suggestion. Here’s the progress from tonight. I’m planing on welding the inside then the outside. I’m going to sart on the baffle plates next. I think I’ll use a whole saw to make holes in the walls

i know pretty small inside but it will make a good 1 man fishing boat once in get it set up.

Reply:Got the whole inside welded tonight and most of the outside. Used my 5 cup the whole time. I wanna make some kind of a trap where the fuel pick up will be. I was thinking using 2.5”-3” tube and put it in the bottom and hang out out the bottom about 2”

little rusty but got it done I plan on mounting the fire extinguisher on the tank is that ok? I’m going to mount my horn on it also and net on the front and back There’s  4 spots up front to tie it down and 2 on the floor 2” infont of the tank on the big side

Reply:Thanks water buffalo! Bist the fuel line will run the length of the boat and the engine had fuel and a spark, fire could be anywhere.   Just making sure it’s not a rule I can’t put it on the tank. I think it may get in the way back there. Thanks for the advise bist!
Reply:While I don't think there is any rule/regulation about mounting the extinguisher to the fuel tank, just consider that, that is where the largest fire would likely be. You are going to be sitting in the back running the motor, below and just to one side of it is the easiest/handiest spot for it to be for quick access. Mounted to the transom(the part the outboard is clamped to) is the least in the way place for it to be. A five pounder don't take up much space at all, and is probably all that is required for a boat of your size. You won't have to move any to get ahold of it, just reach back & grab it. Put one back there and take a look at it before deciding for sure you want it on the tank. Better yet, mount one on the transom and one on the tank, can't be too safe, ya know. Never know when you may need to help someone else out with an onboard fire. The tank is coming along nicely though.

Reply:I've only seen three boat fires personally and they all started at the motor.... but you do want the extinguisher easy to get at

Reply:Make sure when you mount the battery that you get it secured with a plastic case with lid so nothing can land on the terminals and cause any dc arc strikes which also can lead to a fire.Lincoln, ESAB, Thermal Dynamics, Victor, Miller, Dewalt, Makita, Kalamzoo.  Hand tools, power tools, welding and cutting tools.

Reply:This baffle system look sufficient enough? Figured it didn’t need much or anything because the tank is so small

Reply:Considering the 5 and 6 gallon tanks don't have any baffles, and the shape, what you've got should be plenty. I would cut a mouse hole in the four corners area of that baffle tho just so you don't end up with a garbage trap should it ever need cleaned."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
