Reply:Not all types of flux core can or should be used with shielding gas. Using shielding gas with wire designed to be self shielding will make the welds brittle. Dual shield wires (fcaw-g) used with shielding gas are wonderful. Like a continuous spool of 7018 electrode.

You haven't specified if he is using gas-less flux core wire, OR gas-shielded flux core wire. The latter needs CO₂ (or sometimes an argon-CO₂ mix), the former should not use any shielding gas.Page 21, Lincoln FCAW-S (Self shielded Flux core arc welding) Guide is what I recommend you read.

Reply:I use everything to AWS Standards only. Lincoln was aways a higher price than any other brand.I used E71T-1 with CO2 it work best.I purchased 5 at time in 60 pound coils at time for best price or 300 pound. Dave
