What is the most dangerous tool you use everyday?
Reply:Define dangerous.  Most frequently hurts someone or causes the most damage? For me it is the following:Most frequent is a 4.5 grinder. Most potential for damage is the metal lathe. Reply:The beloved angle grinder! Can do it all.Can also ruin anything in short order including your hands, life, face, reproductive organs, and project!Angle grinders:  How many of you have had close calls with them?  How many of you have had more than 10 close calls with them?  *raises both hands*  (and all ten fingers)Also, heights.  Seen so much sketchy stuff go fine, and some that went south.  Not only humans falling down, things falling on humans.  Dense things (metal) make GREAT weapons when dropped from height. In housing construction nail guns are #1, followed closely by saws.Lathes - I've seen some terrible videos of people getting caught in lathes.      If you work around machinery I would suggest you and your coworkers watch some.  As gruesome as they are, It will really bring you a new level of respect for safety around those beasts and you will pay CLOSE attention after.Last edited by SlowBlues; 12 Hours Ago at 03:15 PM.

Reply:Ladder, by far. I'm sure emergency room stats back this up. Yes, grinders and table saws deserve mention, but I don't think they can compete with ladders for injury frequency and injury severity.Last edited by goggins; 12 Hours Ago at 03:17 PM.
Reply:The tool most likely to injure.I see posts about how dangerous O&A is, & folks don't want anything to do with it, but will grab a 4.5 grinder with a cutoff disc...Yikes!
Reply:I'd say grinders. I got hit in the chest with a 7" grinder a long time ago grinding out a slot in a piece held in a vice that was gut high. Cut thru my apron, coveralls, jacket, shirt and just nicked my t shirt. The clothing thankfully bound it up before it tasted flesh and fat.I saw a fella get hooked by a loader arm that he was attempting to ream out an 1-1/2" in our shop drill press. The arm was 4' or so long and heavy enough he used the shop crane to load it on the drill table. Thing he did wrong was he put the clamps on the wrong side of the arm, once it vibrated loose 'round she went. Only thing that stopped him from becoming sheared into two pieces was the opposite end of the arm spun around and jammed up against the column with him trapped in the space between the table and the column. He ended up with a muther size bruise on his A$$ cheek the size of a football...........M

Reply:The one you fail to take safety precautions with before using. Putting a larger than standard grinding or cutting wheel on an angle grinder with no guard is right up there. Can easily chop some fingers off before you know it. Not knowing how to properly use O/A can be very dangerous as well. There are a lot of very lucky people that haven't blown themselves up using a big rosebud on too small of an acetylene cylinder. Just about every tool can be dangerous if you don't pay attention to what you are doing. There are also some people who should stay far away from most any tool.
Reply:The old saying from iron works can you count to twenty. It mends you have 10 fingers and 10 toes. Now you are working safely. Dave

Reply:Guess I Should explain.  If I get the last cup and turn if off, everything is fine.  If they get the last cup, not make me some more better expect something getting thrown at their head. Most of the time they empty it and take off somewhere leaving me to fuss at the walls!Retired Old GuyHobart 210Lincoln AC/DC 225/125 Evolution 14” Saw
Reply:I'd have to say I've seen my share of the exploded grinder disks so that would have to rate right up there, although the burns from the welders and torch have helped me expand the dictionary a few pages . Oddly enough though, it was a 20 ton bottle jack that put me in the back of an ambulance. I've also seen a few cuts from utility knives and got jambed up by big drills and air ratchets. I don't use it every day, but this little gem gets my vote for being the one product that probably shouldn't be on the market in it's current form. A quick braking cordless drill will cause it to come unscrewed and fly across the shop like a death wish frisbee. Maybe if it had some kind of positive lock hex drive it would be a little better, because there are places where it comes in very handy...

Reply:That does look like a disaster waiting to happen.  Not to mention what it might do if it kicks back.I'd have to say the grinder is the most dangerous thing I use.  Grinding skin, starting fires, and throwing stuff in your eye despite good fitting safety glasses(actually full goggles really are the only adequate protection)I can't believe they still sell grinders with on/off slide switches.  They're absolutely deadly if the grinder gets away from you.  I won't buy a grinder without a paddle switch (although I do use the HF grinders for cup brushes.....which is stupid)  A cup brush can eat a hole in your hide very quickly.
