Is there a way to wire in a 4 prong 30 amp 220 plug on these old welders? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:The welder itself only needs two hots and a ground. A three prong plug like a NEMA 6/50P only has three blades, and uses the three wires I mentioned. A 4 prong plug has the two hots, a ground and a neutral. I don't see any issue with using a 4 prong plug on a 3 conductor power cord and simply not connecting anything to the neutral blade of the plug. The code people will likely admonish me, but I fail to see any risk. Just be 100% sure of which blades are connected to the two hot leads in your 4 prong receptacle. Also be aware that on a 30 amp circuit, you will likely be resetting the breaker from time to time. But the chances of you over heating the feed circuit conductors is very small.Miller Multimatic 255
