Hello all, new to the forum and glad to have found a community that I can learn from. I started my welder today, it’s a Lincoln ranger 8 with the Onan performer 16 (18?) in it. Thing struggled to start for a bit but then it did, and after a few seconds the three plug up near the starter, (in fact it is wired to the starter) started to smoke and then just burnt up on me. Felt the wire from it and it was warm but I’m at a lost of what caused it. I’ve been pulling the panels to give it a painting and the green wire on the back of the welder was loosely bolted to one of the engine panels, the ground wire for the machine itself wasn’t hooked up but I don’t remember it being on there before hand. Any help on this would be great

Reply:That is the voltage regulator that controls the battery charge voltage.
