I'm in the market for a corded portaband. Looking at this older Dewalt DWM120. From one of the pics, I'm guessing this is a 2010 model, so 12 years old. Seller says it's in very good condition. Negotiated him down to $150, but he's not going any lower. Worth it?Or better to go with new HF Bauer for $120 (after coupon and tax)?

Reply:Actually, $150 seems like a REALLY good price. Sent from my Lincoln Buzzbox using Tapatalk
Reply:In 2019 I paid $253 for a new DEWALT Portable Band Saw, Deep Cut, 10 Amp, 5-Inch (DWM120K)RichardWest coast of Florida
Reply:I like DeWalt stuff I own a bunch of various dewalt tools. Never had a problem.  I also have a harbor freight deep cut bandsaw and it works OK but it sounds like it's going to blow up any second.  I would definitely buy the one that you were looking at.  It looks to be in great shape and you could tell the owner took care of it.  I see that he put a longer cord on it also which will come in handy.  Unless you are going to mount it on a stand.  If you do I would highly suggest a remote footpedal.  (The saw in the picture is a Milwaukee with a swag table)

Reply:How does it track?  Is tracking adjustable?  The first dewalt I had had a bent axle.  It was obsolete, so I had to fix it.  Never had tracking or axle issue with a Milwaukee.  My compact cordless dewalt had adjustable tracking.I50 is standard.  Not bad not good.  I paid 150 for a Milwaukee 20 yrs ago.  Purchased 3 over the last 4/5 yrs including the obsolete dewalt. Total 250 for all of them.Last edited by tapwelder; 8 Hours Ago at 07:01 PM.

Reply:I believe the adjustment is that screw/nut near the lever.  Not sureMilwaukee has a way to adjust tracking, yet never had to.  Check available of tires,  too.

Reply:Pretty good price, looks like it's in really good shape. The handle looks great for making an easy stand, and the "rafter" (conduit) hook can be extremely convenient depending on your use.**Don't forget to run it, preferably asking him to make a few test cuts just to make sure everything is as good as it looks***Wen sells a portaband that is the same price as the HF unit usually, might want to look into it if you're going that route. The HF portable bandsaw:I've had a few of the harbor freight units and haven't had any *real* problems with them in over 5 years of hard useYou can still find them on sale for $100 (50% less than the dewalt, not an insignificant amount depending on how tight your budget is)They use Milwaukee sized tires (as does dewalt), and other parts are as widely available as the big brands (which is a crapshoot these days)They do sound like they might explode!I haven't been exploded yet!  (use ear protection)The speed control is weird and will "wander" on difficult cuts, you have to have it under load to see what the real cutting speed will be.Whatever you choose you should make a stand/table for it, truly game changing on small cuts.Last edited by SlowBlues; 5 Hours Ago at 10:16 PM.
Reply:Thanks for the advice everyone.Got it. One of the tires was loose and kept falling off, but everything else looked good, motor sounded good, speed control dial and variable speed trigger work. Seller came down another $10 given the tire and I bought it. Someone had asked about blade tracking - it is adjustable on this model.I see that knockoff tires on Amazon are half the price of OEM tires, but get good reviews. I'm sure they'd melt and otherwise become useless quickly in a daily use environment, but for light DIY use, they might be good enough?
