Where, or should I say, is there a place where one could purchase some welding coupons for practice for a reasonable cost? I know steel prices are high now, but your knowledge might justhelp a noob welder out, especially since I begin welding school next month. I want to practice stick & MIG

Reply:I’ve got about 2/3rd a sheet of 3/16” plate, but was hoping to get some 3/8” or 1/2” plate. Last time I checked with my local steel supplier, [about 3 months ago] a 4x8 plate of 1/2” thick was over $700. Reply:The local steel place near me sells pre-cut coupons from their drops for $1/lb. Its highway robbery but its cheaper than buying a 4x8 plate. Maybe there's a similar outfit near you.Miller Multimatic 255

Reply:I used https://weldmetalsonline.com/ last week, good prices but they were out of pretty much everything over 1/8". The shipping wasn't bad, wasn't fast but not bad. The big upside to buying coupons at a place like weldmetalsonline is that they come ready to weld, I'm pretty sure they are cold rolled steel so there is no mill scale to grind off.

Reply:I used to get scrap metal from a local welding business in town, one the owner [Frank] of my LWS had helped its owner [Bob] set up years ago. Bob had a laser cutter which left a 10-12/1000" kerf in 1/2" stainless...and he made everything from computer equipment chassis to roller coaster cars. Unfortunately, during an economic bust, he didn't get paid for lots of work his shop had done, and went out of business. This area has few such shops left.Your area may still have similar businesses; if so, talking to the owner of one may bring a similar association to the one I had.
