Looking at low cost portable band saws. Would like to get more precise cuts than I get with abrasive chop saw or angle grinder, and especially for cuts to make coping/notched joints with angle steel. Can't justify a new Milwaukee or Dewalt band saw for my light duty DIY use. HF Bauer is $130 (hasn't been on sale in a long time, and 20% off coupons exclude Bauer) and Wen is $100. Alternative is a used Milwaukee or Dewalt for ~$150, which seems to be roughly the lower end of the range for these. The made in China models of Milwaukee and Dewalt may be closely replicated by the HF Bauer and Wen, so not sure if worth buying them used. At least with new HF or Wen, you get warranty.Speaking of warranty, HF comes with the usual 90 day warranty. Wen comes with 2yr warranty (assuming they honor it and don't make you jump through a lot of hoops). HF comes with a case, but no blade. Wen comes with blade, but no case.Thoughts on these or used Milwaukee/Dewalt for light duty use?Last edited by goggins; 15 Hours Ago at 12:16 PM.
Reply:Used, those brand name bandsaws are not expensive.  I don’t know anything about those HF or wen.  Had Milwaukee and Dewalt corded and dewalt cordless compact.

Reply:I just saw one today at Home Depot for $149.00 with batteries. I like Dewalt cord for long term use and batteries may last 5 years. But Dewalts cost $250.00. Most metal working tools are Dewalt. https://www.homedepot.com/p/RYOBI-ON...P590/309389020Dave

Reply:I have had the Bauer Portaband from HF since Christmas last year.  I have used it quite a bit to cut out small parts like gussets, and such for some projects.   I have mine mounted upright in a Swag Table from Swag Off-Road Products company.   Mine has been superb so far, especially for those small fabrication pieces one needs. That Swag table has slots on either side for using a miter guage from my woodworking bandsaw, so I can cut accurate angles.   The only thing about the Bauer saw is that I wish it was a little quieter, but its the only portaband I have used, and have no point of reference to compare with the more expensive brands.   The power, fit and finish are very good on the saw.Miller Multimatic 215Miller Spoolmate 150Primeweld cut 60 Plasma CutterMilwaukee Chop SawBauer Portaband Saw w/Swag TableDewalt, Milwaukee, Porter Cable 4.5” grindersMag Drill/Annular Cutters
Reply:I have the Bauer, got it with a coupon for $90. Its not bad. It definitely came with a blade, so not sure if that is a recent change. If you could get a used Milwaukee or Dewalt for the price of the Bauer plus the extended warranty I would go that way, if not the Bauer with the extended warranty is not a bad bet.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:I have the Milwaukee mounted on a swag table.  I also have the HF saw which is only used for anything I can't cut on the table.  They are both good when used with a quality blade. Although the HF sounds like there is a box of rocks inside of it.  But other than the sound I have not had any problem with it.  And the Milwaukee is great also.A bit smoother and definitely quieter.  You get what you pay for.Miller 211Hypertherm PM 451961 Lincoln Idealarc 250HTP 221  True Wisdom only comes from Pain.
Reply:I have a cordless Makita and it was invaluable for the few times I used it but I find it’s my second to last cutting tool used. Ordinary hacksaw would be the least used.:

Reply:Yep, buy used name brand. Check Marketplace, Craigslist (or equivalent), and Ebay. If you're wanting it for in the shop, I'd buy corded. If you want to use it away from the shop, go cordless and buy a big battery for it. Keep in mind that your heavier duty saws usually have decent spare parts availability. I have the Harbor Freight Bauer and I like it. I usually have mine in a vertical table and it's EXTREMELY convenient. When it's set up in the table I ziptie the trigger, set it on its fastest setting then plug it into a speed controller (basically a heavy duty dimmer switch). I've used others, like Milwaukee and they ARE higher quality, but the Bauer is still a nice saw at a VERY reasonable price. Sent from my Lincoln Buzzbox using Tapatalk
Reply:I bought a used Milwaukee for $40 years ago. Zero issues. Quality bi-metal blade is the key. It you're planning on putting it on stand you won't need a case.

Reply:I had a HF and it's blade guide bearings all failed.   Cheap-looking bearings.  Rest of saw ok.   I started to just replace the bearings, but I decided to get a DeWalt instead and it has been used daily for 3-4 years now.

Reply:I can honestly say that much as my Makita is an excellent tool I could have gotten by fine without it.:
Reply:I dont have one. When I started there was hacksaw and a torch, we cut almost everything torch. I use a common chop saw in the shop, not continuously fabricating 8 hrs a day from new steel stock.  Where I cant reach plasma or shop torch or chop saw it usually ends up with one of 2 heavy duty battery sawzalls.  So I agree with Lis that after a while a guy finds what he uses so to speak and doesnt need every tool they ever invented. If I was doing handrail continuous no way not to have it.   I dont think buying one is the dumbest idea I ever heard, its not that big a deal.Last edited by Sberry; 7 Hours Ago at 08:44 PM.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:Beware. There is  a least one models of Milwaukee and dewalt are obsolete and unsupported.  I had them both.  My first Milwaukee was near 30 years old. The dewalt was discontinued after I purchased it probably 6 yrs ago.

Reply:I ruined my good chop saw that way.  Like a dumbazz put some 4 inch pipe at 45 in it and sawed like a madman, shame is there was no reason I had to rush.  A cut or 2 and it would have been fine.  Was 20 yrs old and would have went another 20.www.urkafarms.com

I was cutting a bunch of heavy angle iron. With a fresh blade it took about 3 minutes per cut. After about an hour of doing that back to back, it done gone and let the smoke out.Sent from my Lincoln Buzzbox using Tapatalk
