Reply:Stick flux might be easier to clean than flux core with no gas.  Sometimes the flux residue impacts paint.   Otherwise, I agree either.
Reply:Unless you are completely proficient in stick welding, don't stick weld itIf you only have that HF 170 flux core machine, don't flux-core weld it either.

1st on WeldingWeb to have a scrolling sig!

Reply:Use what you have. Good luck.  The HF welder just adds to the learning curve.
Reply:Learn how to weld before you tackle a project like this! A truck deck isn't that much different than a trailer. You certainly don't want it coming apart when you're flying down the highway. Build a table or some other project that won't have catastrophic consequences if it breaks or the welds don't hold. Welding isn't something where you can just buy a machine and start building projects. You need to learn how to make sound welds and that takes time, lots of time. Think in terms of month's not days to learn how to make sufficient welds. Having a better machine makes it a lot easier to learn but still takes a lot of time. Even weldors with years of experience are still learning how to improve their welding. Welding is lifetime learning to be proficient at it.
Reply:I have a 2001 ford ranger with 340k miles on it and runs great, so been doing welds on it here and there from rust on bed from chlorine . Maybe in 1 or 2 years if that I will remove stock bed and just put a flat bed on it for looks , I pull a galvanized trailer. Any way thanks for your reply. BTW, that HP 170 has the Mod on it .
