I've wanted to try this for a while, I know it wasn't possible but it's another thing to see it first hand. Was interesting to see how it behaved and how brittle things were. I think I was even more surprised by what happened with MIG welding aluminum with C25 gas, was, energetic

lolAnyway, here's the video if all of it:Will say, the welder was the MVP of the day, it just worked and did anything it was asked, so good job Miller Multimatic 215.

Reply:It can be done, but ... probably gonna make a mess of your shop!
Reply:Friction Stir welding Aluminum to steel https://www.sciencedirect.com/scienc...20base%20metal. BIMETALLIC JOININGFrom Copper and Aluminum to Steel and Inconel, friction welding allows for the joining of dissimilar metals If I read correctly. This company says they can do it. https://www.mtiwelding.com/manufactu...hoC5hAQAvD_BwELast edited by 455dan; 3 Days Ago at 11:39 PM.HTP  Pro Pulse 220 MTS (Anniversary Edition) 1962 Idealarc TIG  300 300 1974 Idealarc TIG  300 300  1988 HF Power MIG 150  2015  Lotos Ltpdc2000d plasma/Stick/TIG    Victor 100 torch, 200- 210 Oxy/Acet gauges
Reply:Cool experiment! I believe the correct way (or one of the correct ways) is to aluminum braze weld the aluminum to the steel. The aluminum braze bonds with both, and supposedly a good joint can be made. I have never tried it, but it's listed as an acceptable joining method in one of my old manuals.SRA & IWW memberCentury: 250 amp AC/DC, 295 amp AC, High Frequency BoxVictor, Harris, and Oxweld Oxy-Acetylene Equipment.
Reply:Dupont used to or still does make flat bar strips which are steel on one side and aluminium on the other to join steel and aluminum for thing like aluminum superstructures on steel hulls in shipbuilding.
Reply:Fronius sell a machine that can actually do that.https://www.fronius.com/en/welding-t...-processes/cmtLast edited by William Payne; 2 Days Ago at 06:57 AM.Gear: Esab power compact 205 with tbi industries torch         BOC Smootharc 185dc tig         Miller Syncrowave 350LX

Reply:The first video can only be described as a ~ Complete Waste of Time!

The second has me wondering the application though. Obviously there's a need, I just can't think of what that need is....
