Reply:Sinking the drydock to lauch a ship.   Keep an eye on the level of the bow thruster and the heights of the wing walls until the ship floats off.  This process takes at least 4 tugs LARGE tugs for a ship this size and of course a deep section of river.   The drydock has its own power so it can raise and lower while floating in the river.

Reply:Awesome stuff man!  I'm sure it has been asked before, but how would one go about working in a shipyard?  Any suggestions?  I'm in the Chicagoland area and worked at O'Hare for 3 years and loved the environment.  Welding at a shipyard like that would seem ideal for me right now, if it happened to be close to home.
Reply:A lot of these yards are covered by the local boilermaker/shipfitter unions.  Try to talk to someone there.   The other thing i do is look on craigslist for shipfitter / welder.  i'm sure there are websites for traveling hands too.  They would have a good list of all the yards and who is busy.   A lot of guys get started thru a staffing agency.  Sometirmes the pay is a little higher that way but then you dont have all the benifits.   The guys in my yard that started thru the agency say this is the best yard they have worked at and most of them want to stay.  if you can weld wire in all positions, carbon arc well, and pretty good with stick and torch thats a great start.  Main thing is you have to be able to listen and learn.   There is a lot of things that work for you in the shop that do not work as well ship fitting.   So if a boss tells you to do something in a certain way just understand there usually is a good reason for it.  They may not have time to explain everything at first but you will get the hang of it.“I'm going to do the thing that God put Galen Beasley on this Earth to do:Have Salon quality hair and weld.Nothing like a good cup of coffee and the smell of 6010 burning in the morning. 971-204-3444 cell API ASME Structural NDT and Repair

Reply:I have a lot more cool pics but cant find where I saved them.   So I borrowed some from my buddy Roger lol  Pic 1.  This is what it looks like close up on the drydock.   There's about 6' of room under the ship to walk underPic 2  Our Fire Watch training class done with 1 1/2" hose and Co2 extingishers.  Global Sentinal in the background is one of 2 ships (Dependable is the other)  that are cable layers who's home port is in our yard.  Pic 3  Try to stay out of shaft alley

Pic 4 this is my very first insert I ever welded on.   Roger and I did it together.  I put the root pass in and roger did the fill and cap.   Ceramic Tape Welding,   If you look close you can see there is faint red line down the middle of the gapbetween deck and insert.   Thats the ceramic tape that gives us our weld bead underneath,   Only needs to be welded from the top side if done correctly.  Heres a couple videos of us working together :      .052 dual shield overhead  Welder DancePic 5  Is the finished insert that Roger Capped.   Nice job buddy!!

Spent 8 years as an electrician at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in the San Francisco Bay. Our shop supplied all the power for crews in drydock. I'm on Swan Island now in the Freightliner Truck Plant. Enjoyed your pictures, Thanks. That little black dot between the red cascon shack and the quonset hut is me. At least I think it is.

Drydock 4 at Hunter's Point in San Francisco, now this is a large drydock. The Aircraft Carrier Enterprise hung out all the way around when we supplied shore power.

Reply:Gotta love it!!! The bigger the ship the better, That is until you have to run back to your power source to adjust the settings halfway down the ship and up 6 decks.  lol  Lookng at the first pic i was wondering if there is more than one whirley crane. Couple of our drydocks are set up so theres multiple cranes on both sides..“I'm going to do the thing that God put Galen Beasley on this Earth to do:Have Salon quality hair and weld.Nothing like a good cup of coffee and the smell of 6010 burning in the morning. 971-204-3444 cell API ASME Structural NDT and Repair

Reply:nice pics man! that oval shaped plate you welded in, is that beveled or cut smaller than where it was fit into to give ya a gap to fill? hard to tell from picture. but beautiful work
Yes there is a bevel.  thank you.  Good eye! Theres a bevel all the way around. When they laser or plasma cut the inserts they are cut usally 1/2" to 1" shorter that the hole that was cut.  This allows a 1/4" to 1/2" gap all the way around to get 100% penetration using ceramic tape.  (WITHOUT BACKGOUGING!!)  Way faster and X-ray quality welds if done correctly. The back of the weld in the first pic looks like it was welded from the back.  In reality its all welded from the front.  The ceramic tape has a nice u shaped grove for the filler metal to lay in.
On plates that are hung vertical its done differently depending on location.   Pics below.  This big insert on the side of the ship there is a bevel on 3 sides of the insert.  It is also welded in a sequence to prevent pulling and cracking.  The lower edge and both vertical sides are beveled.   There is also a bevel on the ship on the upper edge too.   The plate in the pic is close to 1" thick  It was not beveled on top allowing the weld would have somewhere to land.   There is a 1/4" up to 1" gap in rare occasions.  (1" gap is very unusual unless its very thick plates being joined )  Depending on the thickness of the plates being welded and the position they are in.  To fill the gap they are welded with ceramic tape backing in 1,2,and 3G  With .052 Dual Shield 100% Co2.

Reply:Really good that they are buying a larger drydock to expand capabilities. Also a shame that an American shipyard that works on many USN vessels purchases the drydock from a Chinese company. Would be much better to see it built by Americans at the shipyard that will use it. IMHO
