Could not imagine any other option but to cut this shoe in 1/2, place around baseplate and weld. However, while posting this it seems perfectly feasible to install and use paintable chalk over the two seams. I guess most would have fab handrail in two pieces, but my initial approach was to use one of those two piece plastic shoe covers and I figured a one piece handrail would be better. Any rate this is my first attempt at handrails and I want to thank all that previously post and answered questions. Have learned allot. I have 5 more panels to assemble and at 75+ I will probably do them one every other day or so

Reply:Five more of these panels to build inserted between 4x4 treated uprights on the deck. Planning to take the panels to sandblaster and powder coat. The two minor handrails I will rattle can those, one in the garage drying now.  I started initially using prepunched channel, but I had several sticks of 1x2 rect tube 14 gage and some 1x1 sq tube 14 gage. So I decided to use 1x2 as the top rail and 1x1 as the bottom rail with 1/2 inch pickets 4 inch O/C, believe Phil and Minnesota Dave used same size

pickets. Kinda tricky sitting up a jig to ensure pickets were on ctr line of both rails, but got it done. Will post pic of jig later, gotta figure how to orientate pics.

Reply:I am no handrail expert. Well, to be fair, I am not an expert at anything at all. But during the installation of some access control equipment in a building I witnessed how the prefabbed railing pieces came with the shoe already inserted in the vertical tubes BEFORE the baseplate was welded in place. During the installation the shoe was slid upwards, secured with some tape, they drilled throught he holes in the baseplate, installed the anchors, and slid back down the shoe over the base plate to cover it. The shoe was held in place with some caulk squirted on top of the base plate. So for the next time you need to do something like this you can install them on the tubes before welding on the base plates.I hope it helps!Mikel

Probably should have pulsed folks on the ww prior to welding. Dunno how the powder coating would withstand the welding heat but I guess one could take it easy. I decided to rattle can the stair hand rails to save couple bucks so your suggestion would probably fit. Thanks for posting.GeezerPower Mig 255C185 TIGBlue 175 MIGRanger 8 Kohler 20HP1974 5K Lincoln/Wisconsin Powered (Cherry)Victor/Harris O/AK 487 Spool Gun
Reply:Making some progress. Two rails by the steps done, wish I would have seen MetalMan post prior to these, would have made them a little more robust but they suite the old farmhouse well and more importantly functional and the Mrs is pleased. Will start the 5 remaining panels between the 4x4's tomorrow, hope to have them finished and to the powder coater in 10 days. I rattle canned the handrails, primer, flat and clear, but rattle cans are what they are,

Reply:From Google:The gist of it is, the phones are designed to work like a digital camera. Holding your digital camera flat, in landscape, is the 'base line'. Developers used this 'base line' in the following way for mobile devices:Apple users: hold your phone with your VOLUME buttons DOWN.Android users: hold your phone with your HOME button to the RIGHT.It's completely against common sense since the volume button is used as a shutter button, so you would think the volume button should point UP! But that is how developers worked it out, so when you hold your phone upright, in portrait, it is the same as turning your digital camera 90 degrees to the side, to take a portrait photo. Since the forum cannot read the data that tells it which way you are holding your phone, it displays plainly from the 'base line' - whichever side your volume buttons are on will be the bottom of your photo (so if you take a photo with your volume buttons facing UP on your phone, the photo will display upside down when you upload it here). There is not currently any plugins or hacks that we've come across that can allow the forum to read the EXIF data at this time. The only way around it is, either hold your phones the way the developers decided you should, OR you can open the photos in an Editing program (not the viewer), and save them in the correct orientation (you might need to rename them, and crop off a pixel or two, to make sure a change is recognized).
Reply:Thanks a ton Timmy. I will try and save future to the hard drive and orientate the picture. Actually none of this represents much of a challenge for most folks here. Maybe I will wait till they are all built, painted and installed then show the completed project. Thanks againGeezerPower Mig 255C185 TIGBlue 175 MIGRanger 8 Kohler 20HP1974 5K Lincoln/Wisconsin Powered (Cherry)Victor/Harris O/AK 487 Spool Gun
Reply:On a different note, Since I seen Phil's handrail thread, that  put me under such conviction I am changing the steps handrail design to be more in keeping with his and William McCormicks approach, lamb tongue and all. Never too old to learn

I was just trying to take advantage of available material.

Reply:Samsung j3 android. Is that part of the problem or the guy pushing the buttons.......probably some combination of the two.I see from you write up I am to """""Android users: hold your phone with your HOME button to the RIGHT.""""" Maybe I should run a test. I typically take a pic, send it to my email and load to my laptop HD and run the post from there. Is that process some of the problem??????GeezerPower Mig 255C185 TIGBlue 175 MIGRanger 8 Kohler 20HP1974 5K Lincoln/Wisconsin Powered (Cherry)Victor/Harris O/AK 487 Spool Gun
Reply:No, I think the forum software is just old. I agree, you should do a test. Home button to the right should do it, if that article writer guy knows what he's talking about.

I was reading Timmy's post and I never put my volume buttons down, I always put them up as that puts the camera button on the right, and I'm right handed.I change the orientation though...This $#!T is supposed to be easy...it never is...I'll have to try and flip my iphone around in landscape mode and see if that doesn't fix the problem of having to change the orientation.

Reply:Took a long time but done. Deck stained, caps added to 4x4 and handrails. I think they look fine for us (77 plus on this end), especially when I consider bottomline was right around $500.00 We opted for painting here, I simply put on a POR 15 basecoat, then top coated with rattle can. Survived the winter ok and passed the grandkids test.  Much of the material was on hand, but if I would have seen metalman handrail post first, probably would have made many changes. Just thought II would post and tie up some lose ends.Last edited by geezer; 7 Hours Ago at 08:49 PM.Reason: Deleting pics uploaded wrongGeezerPower Mig 255C185 TIGBlue 175 MIGRanger 8 Kohler 20HP1974 5K Lincoln/Wisconsin Powered (Cherry)Victor/Harris O/AK 487 Spool Gun
