Has anyone tried to push aluminum with this bernard gun and teflon liner?. If so how were your results? If you have had success with another brand of gun using this method could you provide some details?https://bakersgas.com/products/bernard-q2012ad8rmcThanks in advance
Reply:Tylerd,  I have a Millermatic 255 (awesome welder).  With my previous Millermatic welder, I really tried to make aluminum welding work using a standard gun.   I started with 4043 wire, then tried 5356 wire (stiffer).  I then tried shortening the whip from 15 foot to 10 foot.  I tried a Teflon liner.  I tried different gun tips, even modifying the tips to reduce drag.  In the end, I never got consistent results.  I spent ten times more time on birds nests and tip changes than welding.  Maybe it was just me...I then bought a spool gun for my old Millermatic, and had pretty decent results.  I did not like holding the heavy spool gun for long periods, but it did weld nicely. When I bought my Millermatic 255 I bought an Alumapro push pull gun.  It really works great.  I am so much more productive, and it is so much less frustrating.  That being said, if you try the Bernard gun and it works for you, please share your story - which gun, length, liner, etc.  I would jump back in and give it another try.  As a suggestion, I have heard that HTP has some really nice guns and may have a super slick liner that could work...?Geoff

Reply:I have some experience with pushing aluminium.Pushed 4043 and 5356 through a Lincoln speedtec 405 and a 3m binzel MB36pushed 5356 through my Miller 64 feeder and a 3m binzel copy torch (even made a 5m torch work, but had to be careful)Now the biggie:pushed 1050 pure wire through a Lorch S3, with a 4m watercooled gun. If anyone has tried working with 1050 grade wire, you'll know how much of a pain it can be. It's SOOO SOFT.Tried a few different machines and setups and none of them could push-only other than the Lorch. 5356, no bother, even 4043, but not 1080.Not sure why this is, other than the excellent liner and feed roll system, and a good setup (helped by a very good welding shop who set up the package using their experience). This setup they literally videoed running easily with a knot tied in the whip. This is my Lorch S3. I was running 5356 though it last year, same 4m watercooled gun. No hassles or dramas.

Using a plastic liner with a brass neck liner (short joining liner that just runs through the neck to the tip, keeps the heat away from the plastic). This is how I was taught to trim the liner up to the rolls, and ensure the brass liner is right up to the tip. This means the wire is supported as much as possible.

In summary, my opinion is that it is definitely possible, as long as you set up the rolls and liner properly.
