Another thread made me think about this as the conversation wound up being around what people did and didnt want to do as far as welding jobs. So Im interested in hearing peoples opinions on what their dream welding business would be? What work would you do in your dream business? For me if I stayed in this trade to where it was my full time business (I work for someone else currently) I would like to do specialised welding of special metals and repair welding of things made out of special metals. For example tool and die, aerospace, anything that is not generic mild steel work. I also wouldnt do much fabrication on things that didnt relate to the special stuff. I would expand on that but thats where I would focus to begin with. What about the rest of you?Gear: Esab power compact 205 with tbi industries torch BOC Smootharc 185dc tig Miller Syncrowave 350LX
Reply:It would be chalked full of Government Contracts with no expiration’s or ability to terminate the contract regardless if anything was getting done and as the saying goes “It’s good enough for government work “

Joke it would be making my own line of products that sell like hot cakes for a ton of money.Lincoln, ESAB, Thermal Dynamics, Victor, Miller, Dewalt, Makita, Kalamzoo. Hand tools, power tools, welding and cutting tools.
Reply:A good pickup setup for fab and lineboring and at most one employee. A shop is a money 💰 pit lot money flow. Dave

Reply:Most government contracts are low profit and lots of paper work and no time for welding. Sounds good on paper.Dave

No 2 jobs are the same and when im not busy I shoot my guns or ride my motorcycles. We've done so much, for so long, with so little. Were now qualified to do anything with nothing !
Reply:If I am going to dream I gonna go big, I dont know if the Swedish bikini team needs a welding coach but welding jobs sound like work. I need a shove as it is to pick up a grinder. If I could afford it would have quit yesterday.www.urkafarms.com

Reply:I had a maintenance job at a university. For 5 yrs, the would send open PO with a total amount then ask me to do repairs around campus, they said “it has to be spent and if we run out we will get more”. It was fun and layed back. I got a lot of experience.Ideally, a dream job would be having a perfect dedicatedCrew while I do minimal work and more play. Speaking of govment contract and “looking good on paper”… Nashville Is having issue with trash collection due to growth. Current vendor is also going through bankruptcy. Nashville cannot hire more other companies due to the contract structure. Been serving Nashville 20ish yrs. Irony bankruptcy after 20 yrs steady contract?

Reply:I would like enough interior decorator customers to keep me doing it all the time. Nothing is heavy, very few complaints and they never quibble about price. Plus, you get to make some really cool looking stuff.

Reply:I'm having a hard time putting "dream" and "business" ie "work" in the same sentence. I was always of the opinion that the best way to ruin something you like to do, is make it something you HAVE to do (work)That being said, I like fabricating. I guess it would be a shop that specialized making square pegs fit into round holes. And, with no employees.
Reply:I get a kick out of those,,,,, what would you do if you won the huge lucky lotto,,,,, well,,, building a new shop with a bunch of new tools so I can work on some rusty cars aint it. You would hear my stuff hit the floor and hear me calling the scrap crusher and somewhere for a couple new cars I aint gotta work on.www.urkafarms.com

Reply:I'm pretty much living the dream. Semi-retired on a small tropical island. i only do stainless or aluminum welding that no-one else here can do, or underwater welding for ship repairs. A couple of days of underwater welding pays my monthly nut so don't have to work much. i mostly play with my cars and boats.
Reply:Doing one-off's. At my own pace
