I'm looking for "they" to ask questions. "They" as in "they won't alow us to rebuild torches nor sell parts" coming from welding supply stores (aka lws ) that sell tools, equipment, bottles and gas. I'm aware the service and parts are available from several online sources but I'm talking about over the counter. I'm also aware some lws will send them out two third parties but I'm looking for "they" that forbids in house repair as was once common. You would think the counter man would know but non do or if they know they aren't telling. I'm near DFW Metroplex in Texas and would also be interested in hearing if you've had different experience in your city or state.

Reply:I spent almost 25 years working for a very large copper company, there was a "they" there too, they would never disclose who "they" were. It was always "us" and "them" and "they""them" always prevailed. We had one person in the plant that could repair torches and regulators, he was "special", "they" said so. Apparently he had special traing on how not to transfer skin oils to torch & regulator parts. Kinda funny but it seems strange that anyone can walk in & buy the repair parts.NRA LIFE MEMBERUNITWELD 175 AMP 3 IN1 DCMIDSTATES 300 AMP AC MACHINELET'S GO BRANDON!"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety. Reply:I thank each of you for replying and knowing "inquiring minds want to know" I'll tell you why I am looking at it. Oscar I think your advice is good but I'm already passed that. Like so many allover the world,a few curmudgeons meet for coffee and conversation. Rather than complain about the same things every week, our group sometimes see an opertunity to make something better and that becomes a topic. We've had enough success to encourage additional effort. Corporate welding suppliers have been on a path in recent years that drove 95% of neighborhood auto parts, hardware stores and mom & pop welding supply stores out of welding business. That's financial driven and simply free enterprise at work and investors have the right to invest where they please. The ever increasing effects are fewer places to buy, driving farther to buy and bad attitude of countermen. Briefly going off topic here's what happened to HVACR and I firmly believe welding will be as bad if not worse shortly. EPA began efforts to regulate CFCs in late 80s that resulted in laws beginning in 92. Thousands of changes have since been made and are still being enacted in 2022. Many rescinded or relaxed previous rules but 100% dealt with CFC. Corporate immediately lobbied for and got licensing in 92 and have lobbied for and got additional laws favorable to large companies and detrimental to individuals and smaller companies. Each new law has been used as mirrors and lights to benefit large companies, confus and control public knowledge. As of 4/10/22 if you ask these questions 90% of citizens in Texas (possibly elsewhere) will answer yes. Must you be licensed to install hvac and refrigeration units that must be assembled onsite? Must you be licensed to repair ac and refrigeration units? Must you be licensed to buy equipment? Must you be licensed to buy parts for equipment? And the list go's on but the answer to all those is NO. There are exceptions to all but countermen will not sell wire nuts to a master electrician or copper pipe to a plumber because they have been told it would violate some law and they could be fired and/or prosecuted. There is not a single law in Texas that prevents anyone buying contactors, caps, fittings,t'stat or anything else in their warehouse UNLESS it is or contains cfc refrigerant. I have college engineer training that surpasses majority of license holders and wallet size cards allowing me to buy or preform anything license holds can and a few they can't EXCEPT work for general public. I had a decades long career that included purchasing millions in hvacr and having company employees install and maintain under my permits. The point in this is countermen have been told "no lic,no sale". Back to regular programing. I will not discuss details nor companies related to this but we plan rattling chain we believe will result in fines and thumping a few ears. As in the past,if one or more should get personal financial gain (doubtful),100% gos to local vo-tech scholarships. Unless one is disabled or well past retirement age none of it might seem worthwhile but it's one way we chose spending our time. Once more, thanks.
Reply:It is also because no one has skills anymore and lawyers always ready to make a buck. They would rather sell new stuff and make more on those than they could fixing yours or ceratinly more than selling you parts to fix your own. They are all just a retail store now and not much else. I some ways with throw away society you can hardly blame them for adjusting to it.
Reply:The big thing about doing your own work is getting oil on parts. They try hang there hat on that part But put a regular on tank it is same problem Maybe next when changing bottles you need to take to this bunch to change your bottles for you wit fee too. Dave
