I have been using railroad ties cut in half under my drill rig for years but they are starting to get heavy, and if i dont use the oak ones i will break one every 5 or so wells so im wrestling 4.5 foot of oak railroad tie onto the trailer after every job we put 2 ties under each jack so 8 ties.  i need the height for clearance. So cant usetthose 2” thick  plastic crane mat style, called but i cant get them 8” tall  could probably stack them but mot sure. so was wondering about building some fabricated feet out of aluminum plate it looked like 3/4 aluminuim plate is about 10 lbs a square foot so should be somewhere in the 50 to 60 lbs each but would an 3/4 be heavy enough? Basicly be built a like a channel iron i need the 4.5 feet of lenth do to the ground closes to the well kind of destabilizes on some wells so i want lots of square footage just kicking some ideas around.Do not argue with an idiot. Reply:Wooden beams adsorb shock better and don't slip as easily as metal when stacked. If you used metal, you might have to have away to bolt them in place. What kind of weight are they supporting and what is the area of the outriggers being supported?Maybe installing a small hoist, probably electric with a remote control, would make loading the ties easier and would be better than switching to metal?
Reply:Im guessing under full pull with an extractor hammer running probably in the 120,000lbs range on 2 jacksDo not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

Reply:Gee! That's some serious weight!I would not expect anything fabricated from aluminum to hold up unless it was even heavier than railroad ties. I guess I'd be thinking of a better way to move timbers. Most of the pressure treated timbers are heavier than raw wood. Spruce timbers have a lot higher strength to weight ratio. When American Elm was available we used it for every manner of abuse. I used Elm 2x12 10 as loading ramps for a car hauler trailer for years. They'd make noise, but NEVER break. I even had a homemade wooden snow plow on a little farm tractor. Elm bottom plank made noise when hitting something, would bounce the tractor backward, but never broke.I'm sure the drill rig isn't very stable until you get the outriggers set, but might a gin pole be rigged with two small electric hoists to lift timbers? An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.

Reply:We mill oak cribbing all the time for outriggers. Our customers ask for 4x4, 4x6, 6x6, etc to make them easier to handle. Typically 4’ lengths. One crane customer uses 4x4’s on top of the plastic pads posted by Freebirdwelds. We milled some 18’ 12x12’s last year for dozer cribbing. Reply:I'm with willie, your not going to find something easier that can handle 60k# over a 4' load distribution. Your better off building a custom cart or dollie for the timbers.Aluminum is common material for crane outrigger legs, but I have only seen them going from a 6" cylinder ball to distribute to a 2' diameter circle. Never seen a 4' along aluminum fixture.
