I thought we needed a new chute for loading cattle.  Where we usually load, is so rutted from the last 2 Winters, that it's impassable for anything but a tractor.  Can't even drag a stock trailer through there with the tractor, or it would high center.Nothing fancy.....just a 16' alley with bows to tie it together.  Cube them into a trap, then push them through the chute.  Priced the steel, and wire cattle panels..............About $350.  I refuse to spend that kind of money for a chute.  14ga square tubing at $2.21/ft, cow panels at $27ea(used to be around $16, less than a year ago).Got some extra corral panels laying around that we can cobble together.  Or...........K'kins might have a line on some dirt that was removed from a tank battery dam that's soaked with spilled oil, when one of the bottoms failed on a tank.  At least it wouldn't wash out, what with the thick sludge in it.  Her boss mightl let her have it, complete with free trucking.  Have to see if that works out.  Might be enough to fix the hole, and have a goodly stockpile left over for the next gully washer.  Might be near on 20-30 yards. If the Fed manages to derail the economy, we might see things become affordable again.  This is absolutely insane.
Reply:Priced used 2 7/8 oilfield tubing in West Texas.$64 a joint. Double from a year ago.

Reply:Yep.... knew a guy that thought his farm had been destroyed by a leaking pipeline.... turns out it wasn't that bad. At one time they used to spread used oil on knolls to restore eroded farmland.... potential for heavy metal contamination put a stop to that. If I was accepting any of that material on my farm, I wouldn't be posting about it online. If the feds get wind of that you'll be declared a hazardous waste spill and be forced to clean it up. I've seen the crap guys have had to go through with even old buried fuel tanks. Had to dig up all the "contaminated " dirt and bury it some place else and replace the dirty dirt with clean dirt.... that's the dirt...The harder you fall, the higher you bounce...250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes

Reply:The Shop Is Back Openmal2ofus:  "If you don't need it, don't buy it".  Absolutely, and in this case sort of a disappointment.  I've decided to go ahead and make the damn thing, but it's half what it was supposed to be.

Can't remember the last time I set foot in here.  It's time to get to it, and do a little mental therapy.

We decided that we'd go with an 8' chute, instead of 16', and see if it works.  I can always lengthen it, if it proves unworkable.  This way, it's a little over half the cost.

Reply:There is a lot to observe here.  Funny how pictures tell a story. .

Reply:Be careful about accepting ANYTHING contaminated,, I can list a DOZEN cases where recently something "contaminated " was dumped,, then later it was required to be removed.Shingles, paint waste, things that were never a concern a couple decades ago WILL be removed, if found out.OIL contamination!! Around here, that is required to be incinerated,, just imagine what that will cost YOU!!If you accept it, you own it,, sorry,, I am positive he would give you free trucking,,,,,,,,,
Reply:I got the shop all cleaned out, ate supper, we watched some Yellowstone.........................and I decided to check back on the thread this evening.  I happened to look at the pics I posted.I brought home 3 20' sticks instead of 3 24' sticks

I paid for 24', and the LWS dood, and I, loaded 20' pieces(sigh)  He messed up by picking the wrong bundle, and I messed up by not noticing.  The blame is on both sides.  It's no problem, except for the fact that 20's won't work.  I need exactly 72' of tubing.I'm just not used to seeing 24' sticks.  I have only ever bought 20 footers.  They fit on the trailer if you remove the spare, and run them out to the coupler at the end of the tongue.  24 footers should have hung over the back of the trailer by 4 feet...............and I just didn't notice

Wouldn't be a big deal if it was a weekday, but it ain't.  They don't open up again till Monday. Now, I gotta pray that I have a 10 footer on the rack to finish out the cut schedule.

Reply:I ordered 2 4x8 sheets of aluminum checkerplate back in Feb. Just came in but they got 5x10 sheets instead of 4x8. As it turns out the project will come out of one 5x10 so the 2nd one was kind of unnecessary. They said I didn't have to take it, but it was so nice and shiney....  don't think I'll make cattle penning out of that... 2 sheets of 1/8 with a bit of sheer work was $940.The harder you fall, the higher you bounce...250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes

Reply:All the metal's cut, but can't weld in the high winds we've been having for about 3 days, or so.  Gusts have been constant at around 35+mph.  I believe they had upwards of 70mph gusts out in Western OK.Everything's set for the next relatively calm day.  Tomorrow the wind's supposed to die down to around 20mph, which is doable.

This will be the FIRST time I've ever welded on a level surface.  The new pipe stands make for an easy fixture setup.  Gettin' downright modern around here

Even splurged, and got me a second Empire level to go with the little torpedo level.  These are nice levels.

Reply:Sam, have you ever heard of paint? It's that stuff that protects your projects and stops them rusting

I messed up with steel the other day too. Measured a job up needing 150x100x5 rectangular hollow section. Asked for material quote on 100x50x5 whilst having a brain freeze. Sent customer the quote, she accepted, I ordered the material... and then had to order an additional length of 150x100, that's £200 off my bottom line

Also whatever you do, don't be that idiot hick who accepts contaminated soil. Such an stupid thing to even consider. Soil doesn't improve ruts anyway, they'd be bad as ever in 6 months, only this time you'd have oil traces everywhere. You need to regrade it or lay some hardcore down!

Reply:Ran into some trouble today.  The pipe stands were too wobbly when the steel was clamped to the jig.  Used up some work time adding jamb nuts to the tubes.  Should have done it in the first place.

I can still half azz weld with the wire welder when it's set up for thicker material.  Higher voltage, more amps, bigger puddle.  It makes it easier to see what's going on.  I'm so out of practice, and still haven't gotten in to see the eye doc, that things are not all that good anymore.  I'm thinking I'm not a very good welder these days.  I can't believe that I used to regularly weld 14ga with the little wire welder using flux core.

Anyways, the head frames are tacked.  I don't anticipate doing a very good job on this thing.  Might eat up the morning trying to re teach myself to run a damn welder

Hell............can't see messing with coupons all morning, so's to actually get something done..............decided to do some on-the-job-training I guess.

Although it's light weight, can't see flipping the thing around all day long.........and anyways, you can't weld if you can't do uphill.

Finally got the voltage in the right range, and wire speed is about where I want it(completely forgot where I used to run this crap at....was running way way too hot at the beginning).  It's the gun manipulation that's rusty.  Took 6 welds to get to this point

14ga is generally a BOOGER with gasless flux core.  I'm just getting to the point of remembering how I used to whip over to the thin piece, while keeping heat in the solid piece.  Take a few more welds to get back to where it ought to be...........................or not

This might be as good as it gets

  Sigh.........
