Hey everyone,  I did some quick searching and haven't found anything really pertinent so I thought I'd start a new thread to see if anyone has any advise or resources.  I'm still pretty fresh out of school and was lucky enough to have found work half way across the country from home but recently just got laid off due to not enough work and now have to update my resume and start shopping it again.  I am wondering if there is anyone who might be willing to point me in a direction to get help with my resume.  As I said I'm fresh out of school with only a couple of months experience and I'm having trouble with figuring out what stuff is pertinent to put on the resume and how to format it etc.  If anyone would be willing to have a look shoot me a pm and I could email you what I've got. Thanks so much everyone...Marty

Reply:When you are fresh out of school you need to highlight your pre-grad experience. You want to show that you have a pattern of work before completing your trade. I had my first job when I was 12 as a dishwasher in a kitchen, I had that on my resume for a LONG time because people like to see that you started working early, I used to put on my construction/drywall jobs from when I was a teenager because people like to see that you can do "real" work.Just think about what the resume is, it is a sales pitch for yourself. Consider your audience, use the experience that you have to give them what they want.
Reply:For anyone else interested, I recently found that a Functional Resume format works well if you have limited work experience to show on a resume.  It seems to do well also in the case of many different types of work experience that don't exactly lead to a well defined career path.  I have experience in many different industries, and the Functional Format seems to better showcase my skills, rather than simply a track record of progression in a single field. You can find many good example of this type of resume with a google search.Good luck!-Greg
Reply:I agree with Salem.  Also make it on one sheet.  A foreman wading through a pile of fancy resumes just wants the basics.  Fancy career goal descriptions don't cut it for a welding job.  Having a few crap non welding jobs that you stuck out for more than a month says something about your character.  Also if you are asked to come in a run a few beads make sure you are wearing proper work gear.  This week one came in wearing flip flops and the other runners.  I am not the foreman but really he should have crossed them off his list immediately.  I had to lend one guy side cutters.
Reply:I have experience writing results driven resumes.  I have written them for trade professions as well as executive positions like bank VP's.  If I can ever help fire over a PM.  After college I took a professional course on resume writing to help with my job search in the pharmaceutical industry.  LOL too bad I only worked in the suit and tie job a couple years before leaving to start a fabrication business.  Dan"I Build Stuff"
Reply:Salem is right in the fact you have to tell potential employers what you can do for them.  Many people make the mistake of telling... I did this and I did that.  Who really cares?  You should be telling people what you did and what the result was from doing it.  State the information in a way that fits the potential employer and in a way the person reading the resume can see you fitting into their company.  When people hire someone they are looking for a solution to a problem.  The problem can be a body there to get work done, a new guy to grow the business, or simply to help free up time for other higher paid employees so they can be more effective. It should be understood that by simply hiring a new person a company is not directly going to benefit.  When you are hired the company now has to generate more sales to pay for you and the added expense you generate.  Think about this for a minute.  When you are hired a company now has to make more money to pay for you.  In other words the employer has to take on more to profit the same amount at the end of the week.  The business owner projects on how long it will take to generate more income from hiring you.  The company has to do more work to make the same amount of money, but at some point the extra work will return more profit.  Too often employees do not understand this.  Here is another way to look at it.Consider a company adding a new man on the crew.  The employer has the added cost of salary, taxes, insurance, benefits if provided, workers comp, new equipment if required, and the 2-3 months waiting for you to get up to speed and be productive.  Hiring a new person is a major investment and gamble.  If you understand the investment and show ways that you can benefit a company you will stand out in the crowd.  If you show them what you have done and how it will BENEFIT them you will be ahead of most others applying for the job.The point I am making is you need to understand the position the employer is in and look for ways to be an asset to them.  There are a lot of bodies out there looking for a pay check.  Be the guy or gal who is going to help them make money.Dan"I Build Stuff"

Reply:Keep it simple Address the school and and what you can do. Most shops want someone that can weld and do other work. A rod burners are everywhere and doing more just welding will make you stand out. Dave
