Last year I had an old wood stove faceplate laying around and decided to build my own heater for my shop. Afterwards I built 2 more using similar face plates from barrel woodstove kits and to my surprise they sold quite quickly. Now that I have a CNC machine I'm planning on designing my own door and air intake so I can cut out the costs of barrel stove kits in the future. My boss is giving me a killer deal on I-beam too (roughly $0.82 a pound) and I can build the grate from stuff we throw in the hoppers. I'm thinking I'm gonna make a pretty penny on the side this fall and winter...

Reply:The stoves look really niceGreat job. But I agree, that bottom rack wont cut it at all. It will end up twisting like a pretzel. Instead of the rack, I would probably use fire brick. They make thin fire brick for that purpose. I used them once in a pizza oven.Miller 211Hypertherm PM 451961 Lincoln Idealarc 250HTP 221 True Wisdom only comes from Pain.
Reply:I've had many people ask about lining the stove with fire bricks, but I had to have a way for air to get under to help the fire breathe. So far the grate has only bowed a little, I anticipate it to last about 2 or 3 more years, then I'll grab more scrap outta the hopper and build another one.I will say this, these stoves are incredibly efficient. After the chimney gets hot you can dampen it down almost to where it's closed, takes a good amount of time to burn through wood and it's hard to see any smoke come out the chimney Millermatic 200®️Spoolmatic 1®️Craftsman️ 180 amp AC arc welderPrimeWeld CT520D3x4 CNC tableRazorweld 45 Victor️ OXY/acetylene torch
Reply:Can you give a bit more info on using the soft copper pipe to heat water? How well does it work? Is the water pumped through floor or radiators? Pics also please or that setup.Edit: Now I notice a blurry image of a small radiator with a fan(s) in one picture. And another picture of the fired stove with no coil on the stack, but a much better view of the radiator.Any safety built in to the system in case power to fans go out?Last edited by bead-boy; 1 Day Ago at 05:25 PM.Century buzzbox that I learned on 40+ years ago (was Dad's)Crappy Century 110volt mig 70 amp pigeon pooper.Lincoln Idealarc TIG-300
Reply:That was a little science experiment of mine. It's a thermal syphoning heat exchanger. As far as a safety goes there's a reservoir attached to the top that has a vent. If the fan isn't on the water boils and steams out, there's no pressure in the system Millermatic 200®️Spoolmatic 1®️Craftsman️ 180 amp AC arc welderPrimeWeld CT520D3x4 CNC tableRazorweld 45 Victor️ OXY/acetylene torch
Reply:If you can find some grade 6 rebar to make the fire grate out of, it would be good. It makes a 20 year grate.
Reply:Heater firebox looks good, weld beads look like they could use some more practice.

Reply:I hate to be the "woodstove police",, but, you should check the laws regarding selling woodstoves. Many places even selling the used 1970's "PAPA BEAR" type stoves are totally outlawed. The stoves MUST be scrapped.Stoves must meet emissions etc,, tests. And one of those stoves can void a homeowner fire insurance policy. An individual that worked for my sister had a woodstove in a home he owned. The county gave him a few thousand dollars, and required that concrete was filled into his chimney. He bought some sort of heat pump with the money. There can be pretty stiff fines for selling a DIY wood stove,, that kinda eliminates the fun of building the stoves,,,

Reply:Yeah I was thinking the same thing when I first saw the pictures. But I think if you sell them on a small scale/on the down low or by word of mouth you should be OK. I certainly would not try to start some sort of business making them.Miller 211Hypertherm PM 451961 Lincoln Idealarc 250HTP 221 True Wisdom only comes from Pain.

Reply:It's all about how you market them that matters, when I sold them I put NOT FOR HOME USE! ONLY FOR SHOPS. Although I can't confirm that it's a bulletproof method (how the hell do people on Etsy get away with it?)And no it's not flux core, I stick welded the body together and I know my stick welding is subpar. In my defense though I did use 6011 rod, and it's hard to lay a great looking bead with those, but they work great for filling the seams. Been taking scrap plates home to practice my welds with 6011 and 6013, I still got a ways to go but I'm getting better Millermatic 200®️Spoolmatic 1®️Craftsman️ 180 amp AC arc welderPrimeWeld CT520D3x4 CNC tableRazorweld 45 Victor️ OXY/acetylene torch

Reply:7018 rod is a little more pricey compared to 6011 and 6013. Plus I already have 50# of both and only about 6# of 7018 I'm probably gonna save for fixing tractor implements and such.Sucks that there's so much red tape for these things, honestly I feel like it's a well thought out design, no leaks and when you shut the air intake and close the dampener the fire goes out as it should. Maybe I'll just label it as a camp stove? Idk, Indiana isnt as strict on things as California would be I suppose Millermatic 200®️Spoolmatic 1®️Craftsman️ 180 amp AC arc welderPrimeWeld CT520D3x4 CNC tableRazorweld 45 Victor️ OXY/acetylene torch
