What is the major difference between the Black Face and the Red face SA and SAE welders of the vintage 59-62 or so ?I know that the Red Face units seem to be highly preferred . Also Round barrel vs Octagon barrel ????In addition the one that I recently acquired has the vacuum idler as opposed to the newer electronic pc board idler. Was there major issues with the vacuum idler of the earlier years provided I find my vacuum idler functional?I am trying to determine the type of carburetor that I have ... Marvel or Zenith but I have not removed it yet and cannot find any name plates or names on the castings. Any dead give-aways to determine the type ?I will have more questions regarding these units going forward so I hope that you do not tire of me too quickly.Thankswxyoung2008

Reply:The vacuum idler works fine if you have a good one without a cracked diaphram. You will have to pin it at full throttle to grind if it doesn't have the "grind eze" solenoid (add on) on the aux power. They can be persnickety setting the delay with the felt screw. Had 2 late 60's round barrels with vacuum and grind eze kits that worked well. If your idler is junk, I think it's about $350-400 bucks for an aftermarket electric idler upgrade. I have been around a few vacuum machines with bad idlers that just got pinned after warming the engine up and ran that way all day. Only a 400 RPM or so difference.
