I’m building a rolling cart for my neighbor for his 2 Big Green Egg smoker/grills. I plan to cover the top with stainless. It will have 3/4” plywood under the stainless. The weight is on the platform below the Eggs so the stainless is just for easy cleaning. I need to know if 16 gauge is the right material? What do you recommend? It will be similar to this picture  I found on the internet except there will be circles cut out instead of opening all the way to front.

Reply:My recommendation would be 11gauge or higher if the budget permits.  16gauge would work in terms of strength and structural integrity but in my opinion would be very susceptible to dings and things of that nature.
Reply:If it's just for the countertop overlaying some 3/4" plywood, 16 gauge would be fine.

Reply:Will this be a flat piece or will you have edges to hide the plywood. Having edges will help keep it flat , and might not require any fastening. It would also protect the edges of the plywood from stains, and dings that might compromise the finish.I recently cut down some tables in a pizzeria and they were surprisingly 1/16” stainless steel. They are usually at least 14 gauge. There were a few gouges and dings but they abuse those tables something awful.

That will cover the plywood edges and also the top edge of the cedar planks vertically around the three sides. Front side will be trimmed in cedar with cedar drawer fronts and doors.Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com
