Hi folks, I figured my post in the 'Other' brand forum was probably going to get lost or very few replies. So a bit about me/what I'm looking for. I'm a garage DIY guy, with little first-hand experience (well, lets call it zero.) That said, I'm a mechanical engineer, so I respect and understand the various types, limits, etc of machines and welding in general. My goal is to get a machine that allows me to start learning and leave a bit of space to grow. I'm interested in getting a MIG/flux core machine to start with, TIG would be cool but I don't think I have a need for it, nor am I going to make things of beauty any time soon. I'm thinking, roof rack attachments, supports for building a porch, etc etc. Anywho, I found a facebook listing near me, the gent is selling a "Marquette 175A M12208" for $400. I was wondering, I have never heard of that brand nor can find any info on the web about that model, but he said it's basically a re-badged Lincoln Electric from the same era (circa 2002.) But, I also saw Eastwood has a 180A machine for $500, so that $100 could buy me 3 years piece of mind. Yes, I know that Miller/Lincoln/Hobart probably would be the way to go - and I would if I could find a good deal (I'm in Houston, Tx so really have to jump on listings or they will sell before I even get a chance to see it), but 1) I really don't have a plan currently to do much more than tinker, and 2) I'm at 'high risk' of having to move and sell pieces of kit. So, I don't want to break the bank, but just want to get a step-up from HF. I'm completely open to suggestions!
Reply:Actually the HF Vulcan and Titanium brands have gotten pretty good reviews here. Do a search as this question has been asked and answered many times. It mostly turns out to be mostly a budget question. It’s kind of a Ford vs. Chevy thing. Most of us recommend the big 3 - Miller, Lincoln, or Hobart (many used are usually very good). On the other hand, many guys love the newer inverter models. They are cheaper, lighter, and as a rule. Availability of consumables, parts, and service along with customer service are BIG considerations. Keep enough money for protective gear, clamps, grinders, cutting tools, etc.Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com
Reply:I would look at the primeweld mig 180. Right around that price and a 3 year no BS warranty.
