Reply:Don't understand, oxygen is an oxidizer, it does not burn but it accelerates combustion, what actually was burning? I had read somewhere quite awhile ago that some genius decided to mix propane and oxygen in a single cylinder so he wouldn't have to carry two. Don't know if it's one of those urban un-substantiated stories tho.......MikeLast edited by mrmikey; 9 Hours Ago at 06:25 PM.

Well he did something he was not supposed to perhaps ran the machine faster than it should have been run to go home early. And the carbon dioxide froze in the very large tank. The guy left the pump running not pumping anything and this caused the pump and bearings to over heat, actually glow, until the whole assembly yellow hot metal blew into the tank with the dry ice, and the sudden over pressure and heat caused the dry ice to detonate much like an atomic explosion.  Wiped out a large area. You need to be careful when dealing with pressures. They say that is what caused WW!.I have seen a lot of extremely high pressure solenoid valves and they are almost always burned inside from the sudden pressurization. Sincerely, William McCormickIf I wasn't so.....crazy, I wouldn't try to act normal, and you would be afraid.

Reply:This is kind of scary. We used to carry 3-4 of those exact cylinders in the medic unit. An they would get tossed around very carelessly. I am surprised I never had an incident with one in the 15 years I worked in EMS. And when the adrenaline is flowing, we didn't crack those valves slowly by any definition. I did see an old lady once who suffered 3rd degree burns over 36% of her body because she was smoking with her oxygen on. All of the natural oils in her skin flashed over and burst into flames. She didn't last long after that.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:E tanks are medical grade tanks that take the yoke type regulator/flowmeter. Someone mentioned filling tanks using copper tube, I used to fill our torch oxygen with medical oxygen from the 4 tank (M tanks) cascade system, starting with the tank with the lowest pressure and stepping to the next lowest and so on until the tank was finally full from the fourth & final tank. I can't help but feel that there were other forces in play somehow, I have worked on the E tanks many times in the past, always empty, if the valves didn't operate with the supplied wrenc(6 inches or less) they were returned to the company that did our hydros for repair. As mentioned up the page, oxygen supports/accelerates combustion, I think a hydrocarbon was introduced into the picture.LET'S GO BRANDON!NRA LIFE MEMBERUNITWELD 175 AMP 3 IN1 DCMIDSTATES 300 AMP AC MACHINEGOD HELP AMERICA!"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” BENJAMIN FRANKLIN

Those cylinders use a seal between the valve and cylinder neck. One style is a nylon type flat washer. It is good because it contains no hydrocarbons but is bad because with heating and cooling cycles of filling can become loose. The other style is a rubber o ring but those have hydrocarbons. The story I was told was that there was a cylinder standing upright on a concrete floor. It was knocked over and there was enough hydrocarbons in contact with the oxygen that when it landed on the concrete the shock set off a violent reaction.

Reply:In the old days I always had one of these as my key chain. When I was on duty I would stick it in my waist band almost they way you would carry a 45 pistol "Mexican" style: over the right hip with just the keys sticking out. I never lost it that way. The only difference is that back then they made these with a hexagonal cut out in the end of it (instead of just a plain circle). The large end of the wrench fit the packing nut on old style D and E cylinders. The skinny end was for opening the valve. EMT shears, O2 wrench, buck knife, CPR mask and and a 3 cell mag light were my standard EDC equipment when I was in uniform.

Reply:Well... he did put an oxygen tank in a chain vise and went after it with a crescent wrench.
