pushing a puddle

Been practicing pushing a puddle with the new Tig today and followed the set up in the owners manual, made a few changes a long the way and I think I am pushing it correctly, but would like some professional opinions.I started at the bottom right and worked up and then back to the bottom left and worked up, made some adjustments that made the pores go away, it's 3/16" thick steel, argon flow is set at 15. The pic of the front of the machine shows my final settings, amp's is hard to read in pic but it's 141.At the end of the puddle I get that little build up in the puddle, is that ok or do I need to correct that and how do I correct it. Have not used any filler yet.

Reply:That buildup at the end is from tapering off on your amps with the pedal. Most people taper off too quickly getting a crater rather than a hump. The hump is obviously better than a crater. Tapering off a little faster should get you where you want to be. Looks like you got the torch angle , travel speed and arc length down pretty well.

Reply:The porosity present indicates a gas issue or you contaminated your tungsten by dipping it and didn't correct it before continuing.

Reply:I just used a bench grinder with a fine grit wheel and that was only used for Tungsten, and then I sharped both ends, just flip when needed. You are using Argon from a good source?Retired - Refrigeration Pipefitter - Master Electrician-  IowaLots of Hobbys

Reply:Got to work on my coordination using both hands while using filler and keeping the tungsten clean. More practice is needed.


Reply:You still have a gas issue.  That convex termination is porosity hiding underneath.

Postflow setting does look to be pretty low. Postflow also helps with tungsten contamination by giving it a longer shield time to cool in the gas zone.

Reply:Gas flow setting will depend on Nozzle size and diffuser or gas lens.With small nozzles high gas flow is as bad as low gas flow. In DC the arc should be almost silent. If it sounds like a rocket engine, gas flow is to high. turn down until just silent.
