Now that I have a MIG 220v 225a that also has a stick welder, should I keep my Lincoln ac/dc 225 stick welder or let it go?
Reply:Which do you need more - the space or the money? We all know if you keep it you’ll probably never need/use it again. But if you sell it, within 2 weeks your other machine will fail or there will be some other reason you’ll kick yourself for letting it go. At least that’s how it always works out for me.Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com

Reply:Full disclosure:  I love the lincoln buzzboxes for a few reasons including it's what I learned on from my father, they are rock solid/simple common sense design/last forever, and they were the first "real" welders a non welding pro could reasonably afford (I wouldn't doubt they still hold the record for pounds of rod burnt by non pros). As for selling yours IMO It really depends on your space premium, and your metal working budget. If space is very limited, or your metal working budget very low, I'd sell it and put the funds towards a new tool/material.Realistically you'll likely never use AC (I only use mine in cases of bad arc blow, aka very rarely). As for DC - even a lower tier ~$300ish inverter "lunchbox" welder will have more DC power, and a better duty cycle than the ac/dc 225 (check out the HF titanium 225 specs/price for a general idea) with very nice arc characteristics including 60xx rod (what an age we live in - good and bad).  Many are dual voltage (though most 120v circuits will only be realistic for 3/32 rod and below).  All in the size of a large toaster.  Given the size and simplicity, the convenience factor really is off the charts, and is mind blowing to me.Last edited by SlowBlues; 17 Hours Ago at 10:06 AM.
Reply:If you can get $100 for it, put that towards a newer smaller inverter-based stick welder to keep as a back-up.  Like Slowblues mentioned, those little lunchboxes really pack a punch for what they cost.  Most under $300 will not put out what they say it puts out, but with a DC ammeter, you can make quick work of that.  Makes me wonder what we will see in 5-10 years from now.  Probably 300A 100% duty cycle in the size of a large ketchup bottle, lol.Last edited by Oscar; 17 Hours Ago at 10:31 AM.

Reply:Not a buzz box kids, its a transformer based AC/DC worth more than $100!!Retired - Refrigeration Pipefitter - Master Electrician-  IowaLots of Hobbys
Reply:It's a buzzbox.

I would have even accepted tombstone ( I know the idealarc).

Reply:A backup welder is alway a good think if making money in welding. Dave

Reply:The dc is worth 2 bills or more depending on where you are.  I wouldnt buy a bew one today, would be the lunchbox too but,,,,,,,,, since i already own it mine is still my shop stick unit.  Its got a very good arc and run a whole big ole welders handful of 1/8 lo hy as fast as a guy can put them in the stinger.  Mine connected to lead and ground loom, 2 stingers, connected to building, benches and couple extension work leads. I use it for outdoor and some out on the shop floor.Couple temp outlets been moved

Reply:I grew up with a POS Dayton AC only buzz box, DC out is not a buzz box!!  Agree with SBerry above $200 OTD on CL any day.Retired - Refrigeration Pipefitter - Master Electrician-  IowaLots of Hobbys
Reply:List it for 300 bucks, that is free.  If it sales, then you have premium price.  If it does not sale, then it still cost nothing.  I do not like keeping unused tools, but I do have backups.  An inverter would be a better backup for portability.  So, I would wait for the best opportunity.  On the flip side i may give it to the right person.
Reply:Leads by a door, use same one for plasma work ground.  I have 2 SA200, 2 other eng drives, a synchro, a Maxstar, this is what i still use.  Pic 3 is a pile of stuff i strip out the last time i moved its home, stuff kind of grew on it.

Reply:I know used off-brand inverter prices are rivaling new prices.  So, you welder may bring a nice chunk of change toward something else.Last edited by tapwelder; 15 Hours Ago at 12:02 PM.
Reply:I see them 200-300 all day long here in southern california.  The biggest issue really is space and/or portability.  Long leads or a true 50 amp extension is extremely expensive relative the value of the welder itself.  sberry love the custom polarity decals, adds 6 hp, 10 amps, and 23 mph to the top end!

Reply:Add $10.00 wheels add $100.00 Great return on just $10.00.My self I just pick it up or use hand cart.It is unbelievable but today I can see the return. Dave

Reply:As someone else mentioned, try welding 6010 and 7018 with  your MIG machine.  If it welds fine, then by all means consider selling your older stick welding machine.I was in your same boat a few years back when I purchased a new Lincoln 210 MP.  I still had a Miller 130 and an older Thunderbolt ac/dc machine.  Wanting shop space, I decided to sell the 130 and Thunderbolt, but later discovered that the 210mp does not like 6010, but welds 7018 just fine.Fortunately I have an engine driven welder so 6010 is not a problem.  I have not regretted reclaiming the shop space by selling the surplus machines.Miller Trailblazer Pro 350DMiller Suitcase MIGMiller Spectrum 2050Miller Syncrowave 250DXLincoln 210MP
Reply:For the little bit of dough that you could get by selling it, I'd keep it. As for buying a Chicom lunchbox inerter for a buck-299 to run stick, no thanks. BTDT. Garbitch.
Reply:Dump it. Even before the reasonably priced inverter machines, those weren't exactly the cream of the crop. The set taps, short wimpy cables and high power requirements are a deal breaker.
Reply:But sell the welder now buy the new inverter welders they only last a year.Like all electronics design to die.Dave

Reply:The only good reason for parting with tools is when they are having your estate sale. I'm with Dave on this one... every time I think I need a shiny new welder, I look at all the posts on here where guys are having problems with them. Reply:I don't use it very often it's usually collecting dust in the corner, but when I needed it I have it like a lot of my tools, don't use them very often but when I need it I have it. I will have to try the new stick out and see if I like it I guess, been busy burning Argon and learning to push a puddle. The space that I would clear up would be nice, I could clear up more if I would part with some of the car parts and an engine I will never use ( Drag Racer issues LOL) A little extra money is always nice since the welder was given to me, farmer neighbor passed away and since I was helping his wife take care of the land when she sold the place she gave it to me and the only time I saw him use it was to build the cart it's on.
Reply:Just think of all tv's, computers and phones you have purchased since 1990.How do you still use you purchased in 1990?. That is reality of electronics today.Just think everyone here how owns Lincoln 200 from 1950's and 1960's even 1970's Dave

As for it not being the cream, it kind of is. Low cost was good but i was welding for a week at one time and practice a little so i put the machines next to each other.  150 Max against that red one and should have fired up the synch but i doubt many guys could tell them apart and i actually give the edge to the buzzer on starts and especially restarts.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:Untill recently welding has been greedy, not only small machines but all machines.  Used engine drives cause of it.  There isnt so much need for backup as they are now on the shelf with store open 12 hrs a day. Et them keep it till you need it.  I agree the old is a pain for portable, if you need it and dont have its an excuse today. I wont sell mine but its cause i use it.  If i had to start over i might not replace it.Space cost money too, so does working around stuff you dont need.Last edited by Sberry; 8 Hours Ago at 07:30 PM.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:If i was starting over being a hobby/maintenance guy type thing today would start with a 210 feeder, maybe spool gun to bail myself out of aluminum pinch and se ond machine would be dvi 150 stick.  There are lots of other things, whole world full but i could probably make it through with that. Could do 98% of what i do with the 210 actually.Last edited by Sberry; 8 Hours Ago at 07:38 PM.www.urkafarms.com
