Was a pipe welder for 30 years, then retired. Haven’t burned a rod in the last 16 years. Got bored and wanted to dust off my hood. So I burned a few rods and then went and took a schedule 120, 8 inch test on a bell hole. 5P stringer (uphill) and a low hy filler and cap. Dang, I passed after all those years. Geez that felt good carrying a train car load of low hydrogen uphill. I’m back where I belong, under a hood.

Reply:I worked out of several locals, 627 Phoenix, 587 Dallas, 412 Albuquerque and worked non-union too. Mostly worked power plants - coal burners, nuclear. Tons of heavy wall and TIG’d a lot of 6 and 8 inch stainless. Took a part time job near my home refabing natural gas well manifolds, just 8 hrs a day. Not doing 7 12’s again, too dang old for that. But it feels good and was surprised to pass an x-Ray test right out of the gate after 16 years.

Reply:Wow, you haven't burned a rod in 16 years and you passed the test on your first go-round? I'd say that's something worth bragging about. Congrats, and welcome to the forum.
Reply:Ummmm, I guess it would be getting paid to tinker, since I’m only working an 8 hr day, two days a week which seems like a cake walk. The job consists of 6, 8 and 10 inch schedule 80. 5P root and low hydrogen filler and cap, including some weld neck flanges. Bottom line, I got freaking bored to death. Only welding I’ve done in 16 years was weld up cracks in my mower deck with some 3/32 6011’s, lol.
Reply:I wouildnt want to have to take a test.  I weld often but not alot and its real simple. It would take me 10 days with some every day before I was driving vs hanging on.www.urkafarms.com

Reply:Guessing the welding is outdoors? If inside, curious why the 6010 root and not Mig root and flux-core fill and cap. Sometimes you can surprise yourself with how much you remember how to do something. Be glad you're in good physical condition to do pipe welding. Even without dealing with this damn cancer, I couldn't go back to being a contortionist/weldor.
