Would anyone know what metal the tableis made of? Im needing to make a repair and have trouble making anything stick. The handle broke years ago and Dad just used a pipe wrench to tighten the vise. In doing so, he washed out where the retaining pin drives in to capture the handle. I placed a brass rod in the retaking pin hole and attempted to Mig around the brass pin to build up the hole. The weld just flakes off the base material. Any different ideas would be helpful and appreciated.

Reply:To determine if it's cast iron, drill a small hole in a non critical place. Just enough to make some stuff pulled out by the bit. Check out the video I did on turning the brush hog hub. If the "chips" look like that, it's cast iron, and will need brazing to fix it. Drilling is easier, and more accurate, than a spark test from grinding. Small granular chips............cast iron. Longish shiny ribbons.........steel.

Reply:I've used the Harris Low Fuming Bronze 15 rods with success. I don't do that much brazing, so others might have better suggestions.https://www.harrisproductsgroup.com/...e-15-BARE.aspxGet a can of flux, and you're in business.
Reply:Irish Fixit used to be a member. He passed a few years back. This is part of his legacy. Great fella to talk to, and get advice from.
Reply:This guy does a lot of excellent brazing work, and some excellent machine work. |
