For some context I am new to welding and have never built a camper before. That being said I’ve been trying to make a pop-up camper for the last couple weeks and I am now at a stand still where my knowledge exceeds me and I’m having trouble trying to brain storm possible solutions The issue I am trying to solve is the the cross members in the top portion of the camper that would hanging over my truck bed. My plan has been to use .065 steel throughout most of the frame and so far seems sturdy enough to get the job done. The only issue is that  without any support .065 easily flex’s and would definitely be an issue with the weight of two people and a dog. I initially thought I could just use thicker gauge steel but I was hoping to figure out an alternative that wouldn’t add much weight to the front. For spec reasons I would need the cross members to be 3/4” square. My current idea that I have been floating is making some mounting brackets that I could then drop aluminum tubes into. And possibly some rubber caps that would keep the aluminum from rubbing directly on the steel brackets. So I guess my question is that if I end up using aluminum tube as crossmembers instead, what thickness would you guys recommend using that would remain rigid and not flex with the weight of a few people?  (The cross section is also about 6’)
