I'm building some items, each one has over 100 welds on it. After some of the welds, there's a glowing red ball on the end of the wire but after others the wire looks normal. Welding 1/2" rod to 1/4" bar, Hobart 210 MVP, Lincoln SuperArc L-56, CO2 gas. I Googled to see what might be causing that but came up empty. I'm curious about it, any suggestions?
Reply:Depending on your settings and whether or not you have too much voltage to "compensate" for straight CO2, you might be in Globular transfer mode, and it just didn't make it across the arc.

Reply:Possibly after many welds the gun, diffuser, contact tip is hotter and it is just staying glowing a little longer? I have seen the end of my wire glow for a second or two, but never worried about it because I just got done melting steel with it. I can't imagine anything causing it to glow other than the completed weld."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!

Reply:I have noticed that when the weld is small, like a tack, I don't usually get the red ball. But when it's longer nearly always the red ball shows up. It doesn't cause any problems, I'm just curious about it. So maybe the extra heat somehow does cause it. I don't know anything about globular transfer but when I read about it, that also seems possible. That welder doesn't have a burn back setting.
