Hello,Ive been certified for quit a few years now and weld boken things and make stuff in my auto shop.I recently replaced my old mobile welder for a new more dependable one. I have a Plasma cutter, torches, and many metal working tools and saws. I also have a full automotive shop of tools.I am currently trying to get into mobile welding. (eventually a full time job) Where I live this is repairs and fab for the logging and farming industry, any anything in-between.I recently made some business cards and door magnets, and put an add on CL, however I'm not getting any calls really.Im planning to make some things this winter to sell and take some pictures for a Facebook page.I need to also build a small easy to move welding table, any ideas on that?Ideas and other getting started advice?
Reply:How many potential clients have you talked to or job sites have you dropped card? It doesn't happen overnight and you don't need 50 clients with the phone ringing constantly. It may be 1 or 2 steady clients with new ones sprinkled in the mix.The other stuff is like fishing... If you know nothing about the area you drop your line fish might not be interested in your bait or present at all.Nice to be present in those areas, especially for free, just high exposure doesnt mean high interest without additional work. Paid advertising takes work too, to be placed properly and hit the correct demographic. Can you handle the work when it starts to call.Good luck.
Reply:IMO CL ads only attract low ball jobs. I’d make up some flyers that detail what you can do and grind some shoe leather and introduce yourself to potential clients. Might have a portfolio of what kind of work you can do.Miller 350 DynastyMiller TrailblazerMiller 625 Plasma Lincoln Power MIGVictor oxy/acetyleneHyperthem 85
Reply:What plan to do with the table? Is for shop or mobile use?Dave

Reply:Ditch the CL ad. IF you get replies it will be highly unlikely the business clientele you are looking for. You will only attract the " fix my bike / that's too much money/ I could weld it myself but I don't have the time" crowd. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk:
Reply:I agree 100 percent with the "ditch craigslist" thought as a way of getting into the mobile welding business.Right now, you have things somewhat backwards. You want to do welding and repairs for local loggers and farmers. That has to change for you to be successful in the mobile welding business. What you need is for the local loggers and farmers to want YOU to do their repairs. And to want YOU with all their heart. At that point it doesn't matter nearly so much if "you have been certified for a few years now", or if you have a plasma, or updated your welder. And now for a cold, hard slap of reality. My experience tells me that a successful mobile welder who can perform any type of welding repair, on any type of equipment, at any hour of the day, any day of the week, using the best welding process for the job, isn't asking on an online forum for ideas on how to build a "small, easy to move" welding table. But, that being said, we all started somewhere, somehow. I did. And I will tell you that I started from zero. I was too poor at 20 years old to hire someone to weld and repair the earthmoving equipment I had just purchased. One hundred percent financed. That taught me a lot. I did it, and so others can too.So good luck! And I certainly wish you well. Sent from my E6810 using http://tiny.cc/Forums_reader
Reply:The best is going to business that need welding done and large print business cards. Ready to do work. There time you get job on spot.Dave PS. Have lines for notes on back side of business cards. They keep the note with your information on other side. A card with a lot printing goes in the trash.

Reply:Here's my 2 cents on this... Before I quit my last fulltime job to do my own thing I had all my ducks in a row. I had a long list of customers lined up (reputation) I had a well equipped truck for both welding and heavy equipment repairs I had been building in my garage and was ready to go. Once I was out I never looked back. To this day I have never advertised or even had a business card.
Reply:Get your business license, insurance, etc first. Then go to where you want to work and start hunting. I have never advertised either and have been busy for 15 years. |
