The problem wound up being a bad relay. We were trying to figure out the circuits, and found that the relays have contacts that activate two different circuits when the power is applied. Tested the outputs of both relays, and both were putting positive on the lines. This wasn't right.Did a continuity check on the relays. They didn't match

We found the problem.I have a few New Holland balers on the place. They're resale balers. On a hunch, AND AFTER FINDING OUT THAT THE STINKIN' RELAYS COST $150, I opened up a box that came with one of the resale balers................it had identical relays. So I scavenged one, and we were in business again!! (I say "We" because K'kins is part of everything that gets done around here these days).Got it out to the field, and it was a total disaster. Only made 10 bales before a 20 foot #80 roller chain snapped. The roller run by this chain had been making noise, and vibrating.................................and now we're back to square one.Chances are (haven't looked at it yet), a bearing seized, causing the roller to bind. Then the chain that drives the roller fails. This hay equipment runs alright, up to the point it fails. I've been doing this stuff for decades, and that's the drill.Part of bringing anything into service (or at least I do it), is to run the machine, and take a temp reading at every bearing with an IR temp gun. If it's cool, I run it. This stuff will run ok, and fail without warning. Only way around it is to have an aggressive service schedule that replaces all bearings at predetermined intervals. There's a ton of bearings on this baler..........replacement runs into the low thousand + dollar range, so it doesn't get done. Many of the bearings, including the one that may have failed, require a total teardown. And some of the stuff has to come out of the top of the baler, which requires high lift equipment...............which I don't have, now that the loader is down.I got a FECAL friend out there, that likes to pour gasoline on the fire..........I'd suggest that ya oughta stay quiet on this one. This was a last ditch effort to put up some Johnson Grass mixed with a ton of weeds, because I couldn't get to it earlier. This was the buffer that could have gotten us through the Winter. Only alternative is to hire someone to come in and bale substandard hay. What with the cattle we've sold off, this would have made the difference. Coulda brought the herd back up to the same numbers after Winter.Figure it out tomorrow I guess (shrug)
Reply:Thats a bad fix youre in. I assume you are warning me off- tough luck. You dont want responses, dont post. That said, my earlier advice to hire it done was the same advice I would have given my brother or my best friend, and that I would hope theyd give to me. Get some of the pressure off so that you have enough breathing room to think. If you have to sell cows, sell cows. Get things to the point you can take care of them without running ragged all the time.

Reply:Hire it out???????????? Never heard that, just a lot of vitriol from a keyboard warrior..............???????????????
Reply:If you're one of the guys from the Pit that didn't get over it, chill out.
Reply:Anyways.............the deal is..........try to find some #80 chain in the morning, see what broke it, then get it up and running again, if it will run. Keep on keepin' on I guess. It's what we do.
Reply:A lot of the napa stores have up to # 80 roller chain in stock.
Reply:I've got so I hate to touch a bearing unless it is failing. The last "original equipment" John Deere bearing I opened came from China. I thought it was bad when they started to bring in Made in Mexico bearings 20 yrs ago.250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes
