I was wondering if anyone has an information on an SA200 with a Hercules IXA-5 or IXB-5 engine. What I can ascertain so far is that Lincoln used Hercules engines between 1938 and 194?. Everything looks stock, the welder is beat but complete, down to the cast iron exciter cover. It has a starter motor and two 110v outlets energized with a knife switch which is activated by a small lever on the control panel. I would like to find out the magneto mfgr., there is a plate on the top of the mag, but it is unreadable. I have experience with F-M and WICOs on Continental engines but this mag is not the same. Any help or advice would be appreciated. This is an oldie, I would like to try and save it, the previous owner was hauling it to the dumps... really. Some people have no sense of history.

Reply:Code numbers only go back to SA200s with F162 Continental engines (short hoods). This welder is pre Code #s. Lincoln (as far as I can tell ) does not have manuals on the Hercules powered SA200s. "Code #s?... I ain't got no Code #s... I don't have to show you no stinking Code#s!!!" (H. Bogart).
Reply:I will have to take photos. Thank you.
Reply:Manual IM-109 is the only document I can come up with that lists the Hercules IXB with the SA200 at the moment. The folks at Lincoln can likely do better if anyone can.http://lincolnelectric.com/assets/se...oln3/im109.pdfMM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110

Reply:There's an 80+ y/o man not too far from me that has a 1-man shop and been working on mags since the dawn of time. His name is Duane Long. 870-946-3975. Give him a call, he may be able to help you as there's a whole lot of knowledge sitting inside of his noggin.
Reply:Found out it is a Bosch MJC, discontinued in the late '40s. Mark's Magnetos in Connecticut identified it. Parts and rebuilt mags are available. Thank you for the suggestions.

Reply:Not to hijack the thread but Hercules had a long relationship with Lincoln. This week I looked at a 1979 SAM650 with a G3400 White(Hercules) 6 cyl gas engine. What a beast, came out of the oil patch here in southern Illinois

Reply:From what I can tell, parts for the the larger Hercules engines (gas and diesel) are easier to find because they were manufactured in a larger quantity and for a longer period of time. Hercules must have discontinued the smaller 4 cylinder models at an earlier date. I still see 6 cylinder Hercules engines occasionally but seldom the 4 bangers.
Reply:I tend to agree the 6 cylinders are more plentiful. I've not had much experience with Hercules engines of any kind. I do know they are an old company that built great industrial engines for many years. They are easy to identify with their common accessory drive that runs water pump and generator off one side shaft of the engineSent from my iPad using TapatalkSteveMiller Dialarc 250 (1990)Miller Maxstar 140 STR (2003)Lincoln SA200 Redface Pipeliner (1966)Lincoln MP210 (2015)Victor and MECO torches
Reply:I have the fortune of having one of these welders as well!! Man the stories they could tell. Unfortunately mine only has the crank start option. I bought a toothed flywheel a few years back with the hopes of switching over to a button start, could you post pictures of how the starter is wired up/ what model starter motor is used? Also any info you may have on the carb/idle control. (Did you end up finding any rebuild parts for the mag?) thanks in advance! -Rigo |
