I have an opportunity to buy a Hobart Handler 187 and want to get an idea of what a fair offer would be and if anyone has any experience with this unit I would love to hear what you have to say. It look like they don't make it any more, when was it discontinued and what it retailed for. Thanks for the help!
Reply:I can't tell you how long ago they stopped selling them, but I can tell you I have one and really like it. I have had it every since they first came out with them. Only problem I can really tell you that if you were to ever think about welding aluminum with it they are not spool gun ready. That was probably one of the biggest reasons that the 187 was replace by the larger unit which was made spool gun ready. You could buy the equipment to use a spool gun with the 187 but it would be costly. As far as welding steel though the 187 does a great job both with solid wire or with flux core wire. I do not recall what they sold for new, slept a few nights since then.
Reply:Thanks that helps, i will be using for steel and I have a TIG unit if I need to do aluminum.
Reply:I had the 190 which is the 187 but spool gun ready. Not many other differences. It was a real nice welder. I just sold my 190, plus a cart, a 3 year old HTP auto darkening hood (stryker CSV), a couple of spools of wire, and some extra consumables (contact tips, diffusers, and nozzles) for $600Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:I like mine. I got it at a pawn shop, in "like new" condition, for $400.
Reply:I've had a 187 since they first came out and have been very happy with it using both flux-core and solid wire. Since I'm a hobbyist I don't have a need for 250+ amps. For my projects, if MIG is required it gets it done. Very easy to use and very reliable. I look at newer models with all their displays and functions but simple and reliable keeps the 187 on duty. No spool gun is a consideration for aluminum but I've seen MIG welders used for aluminum with special care. I don't do aluminum so it's a non-issue for me.Dillon/Henrob/Cobra 2000, Victor 100FC, Meco-N-Midget, Hobart HH187, Miller Thunderbolt 225AC, Razorweld Vipercut 30A Plasma, and lots of grinders
