I never liked the old school bases. Just a pain in the arse and a few weeks ago I had to indicate something. No worries to set it up quick but the indicator was face down and could not even be read with a mirror. Messing with it some more I had to walk away for a bit as it was that frustrating. I came back and figured something out but with this inexpensive style ($20 shipped) it became a 5 second job. I don't know if a 3/8 stem is available but the one I ordered was 8 mm so that has to be corrected when received if need be. I have used this style of holder in spindle and chuck type holders and was debating on buying a Noga but figured I would go less expensive to see how I liked it. It is a night and day difference and initial impression of it is that I would be hard pressed to spend money on a Noga but even so if Noga was all that was out there it is still a bargain to own one. Maybe the cheap one will not hold up and many people say to not get a cheap one but I am content and feel light years ahead of where I was.
