Hi, I just got a tig welder but it has a problem. The HF start doesnt work. everything else works fine but no spark so i have to lift start it for now.So far I have tried to bypass the solid spark switch to a homemade open style gap, but no go.Is it possible to fit a different hf board on the welder? dont think you can get this anymore.troubleshooting tips?

Reply:I connected wires to each side of the solid spark gap and tried ranges between 2mm and 0.2. Got nothing

Reply:If high frequency start almost all have spark gap. With spark you have no high frequencyThey can make with the spark gap but can fail. FYI The high frequency is a simple Tesla coil.Dave

Reply:Yes but if you look at the last picture furthest to the right you can see the spark gap switch. That cant be adjusted, which is why i tried to make a quick test gap with wires.

Reply:That maybe the problem. At this point I try moving the gap closer with tap. If does not spark the high frequency will not work.Dave

Reply:The HF supply is called an LC spark gap oscillator . For it to work you need L (inductor) and C (capacitor) high voltage and a spark gap.In the welder the L is an air core transformer it gives a small separation between the HF supply and the weld power circuits. It does allow the 2MHZ radio signal to ride on top of the weld voltage. For a spark to show at the spark gap the capacitor and the inductor must be in the circuit. The white box on the pcb should be a 0.002mfd High voltage capacitor. inductor is plugged in the the XF1 and XF2 terminals.Older units used a simple 115 volt to 6KV transformer. New inverter welders use a boost power system that takes 24vdc to power a flyback oscillator that is pulsed from the control pcb to make the 2MHZ power. On your pcb the red and black wires should be the power supply voltage could be 12 to 100 volts DC. The other two plugs should have the pulse signal. If you try to measure voltage in the spark circuit it will kill a standard meter. you will need a high voltage probe. converts the high voltage to a safe voltage for the meter.
Reply:Hi, thanks for answering. The white cap is marked 1600v n7 0.1uf 10%. is there a way to measure if its ok or not? (Im new to troubleshooting electronics) from what I've read the resistance is supposed to rise to infinity but it stays at about 1400ohm.Could it be because its plugged in to the pcb?I checked inductor and it showed about 4ohm so i guess that's ok.This is in Sweden so its 240vI Don't remeber what i got from red n black wire but i will go check tonight.
Reply:measured red and black to pcb and i got 27v.

Reply:Ok. I have ordered replacement caps the white one i could find a direct replacement but the blue one is 1400v which i cant find the spec sheets for anywhere. only for 1000v and 1600v versions. Anyway, I'll wait for parts untill i desolder the for tests.
