Damn cheap a$$ work pants.

Sitting here nursing a nice little burn on the side of my knee. Kneeing on the floor today scarfing a chunk of junk off a trailer with the torch. Nice hot blob bounces and lands right against these cheap *** polyester blend uniform pants we wear. Instantly melting to my knee.

Reply:I have been through it with the boss a few times. Answer I get is "Yes you can buy your own" Or wear jeans. But since I am the only one that plays with fire and welds, I would not be reimbursed or anything.  I DO NOT! wear the damn uniform shirt though. Reply:The pants are not bad on their own ground but what happened is beyond them. It is like blaming the back yard for not storing the water you are putting on it. I bring a lot of my own **** to work to fill the substandard void.

Reply:We get fire retardent cotton coveralls, and I was kneeling the other day, cutting some bolts on a train car, and I had a hot ball fall on the the wet concrete and shot over to my knee, where it proceeded to burn a hole through the coveralls, through my jeans, and into my knee.  Needless to say, you can get burned from it all, but at least cotton doesn't melt to your skin and keep the burning going.
Reply:Well it wasn't pants but the shoes I was wearing at the time. I was only 11 years old then. My dad taught me to weld when I was 9 years old. He had me get into all the tight areas that he could not fit into. We had a stock car track not far from us ( Now Owned and operated by Dave Blaney). Knew him growing up. Well back to the story. I was burning off a piece of pipe to fit up to brace a set of roll bars in one car and a big glob of molten steel went right down under the tongue of my boot and proceeded to burn it's way down through to the sole of my foot. Could not get the high top boots off fast enough before the damage was done. It burned about a half dollar sized hole and 1/4" deep into the top of my foot. It hurt like the dickens and this also taught me how to do the Texas Speed Step Dance. Took 6 months to heal up and still have a nice scar today from it to remind me of that day.Another time I remember when I first started to weld I was practicing one day for a couple hours wearing shorts. What a Sun Burn I got on my legs out of that fiasco.



Reply:Was welding nelson studs down the other day, with 232. 072 wire, sitting on the deck and the galvanized exploded and went straight into a small hole above my right knee.  Talk about a burn. I could not get that stuff out and i was not going to stand up and let it get into my boot.  I dropped my gun and was in the push up position with hood still down Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2
Reply:When i was about 15 years old , i was gas welding metal stands 1.5 square by 3 feet long.Dressed in a cotton coverall .Sitting on a stool with the frame between  my knees, ioverheated the metal it did not just pop but it exploded  the molten metal that burnt thruthe coveralls and undershorts , embedding in my shaft .I danced around the yard trying to get the hose .
Reply:Beware of chamois shirts, just because they are cotton, doesn't make them safe.  The cotton fuzz on a cheaper brand I had literally flashed off over the entire shirt.  It was so fast I didn't even get burn't, I just had an odd warm feeling for a couple of seconds.

Reply:Talk to the uniform supply,they might provide fr paintsCould be cheaper on them in the long run.If they decline, be sure every pair you turn in needs repair.


Reply:I think that saving on your own health is stupid. I would advise you to buy special flame resistant 100% cotton jeans, such as Wrangler (cost about $ 30), or Caterpillar Pants ($50) - they are more comfortable.
Reply:I've had good luck with cheap dicky pants. I have all sorts of carhartt as well and honestly they are no better than dickys.In fact I prefer wolverine jackets over my carhartt jackets.You pay a lot for the name.12v battery, jumper cables, and a 6013.I only have a facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/pages/VPT/244788508917829

About ten years ago I got a good deal on fire proof steel mill pants and jackets ,heavy cotton they would scorch but not burn through ,I think I payed about $2 each and I got about 20 sets I sold them to other welders for $4 each ,and because they were yellow a lot of guys didn't want them but guts working for the gas company would wear them.Not to highjack this thread with when I was on fire stories I was wearing a frayed cotton shirt , my leather jacket was open and it went up in flames ,I didn't feel the heat but smelled the smoke rapped the leathers close and them I felt the heat, a poly pant story I was up on a ladder on top of a boiler cutting out a beam and my leg was getting hot I though I was to close to a steam pipe Pant leg was in flame and melting .If I hadn't been wearing cotton socks the pants would have stuck to me .

Reply:Tell them you don’t have your welding clothes on today ,will need to do it tomorrow when you have right clothes on
