Total newbie, need help desperately.. ;)

I ripped off the rusted rocker panels of my Jeep thinking I could spot weld the new ones on with my wire welder, and that's not working. I believe it's 18ga steel on both the body and the new rocker panels. I don't know squat about welding...I drilled the old spot welds out, so want to re-spot weld the new panels back on. So have the new rocker panel with a 3/8" hole in it pressed up against the frame, and want to fill that hole (x40 of them)I borrowed a Lincoln Electric AC225, going to the store to pick up some 6013 5/64" rods and 6011 3/32" rods to see which one is better.  Am I on the right track?I have to run the AC225 using a generator as I don't have 220 except for my dryer.  So running it with a Champion 5000/6000w generator.  I think from what I've read this will give me 20A max to the welder.  Any help appreciated.
Reply:Tell us more about the Mig machine it should work. Trying to fill holes, or the panel has the hole and welding to a base ?A 120V mig will easily weld sheet metal...Magazines have issues, everything else has problems

The ground of my flux core wire welder was firmly on both pieces of metal with vice grips helping to secure the cheapo clamp.  The weld I'd get would stick to one of the pieces, but not both, or if it did it would be real weak.yes, I'm borrowing the AC225 arc welder (google it, or see link above).  I have 5/64" 6013 and 3/32" 6011.  I'm waiting on an adapter plug from Amazon so I can hook the arc welder to the generator.
Reply:You want a Mig machine for auto body work preferably with .023" wire. Trying to do it with stick especially being a newbie, could make a big mess that you need to take it to a body shop to repair. Any welding process using an electric arc is arc welding. An AC225 is for stick welding.

Reply:A Champion 5000/6000w generator is probably not going to run that AC 225 welder very well. Lincoln recommends a 15KW generator for that unit. You would be better served running an extension cord from the dryer plug to the welder. That being said, using a stick (arc) welder to repair sheet metal is not for the inexperienced. Its probably one of the most challenging things you can do with a stick welder. You are better off going back to your flux core welder. Why is your flux core welder "not working"? What exactly do you mean by that?Miller Multimatic 255

Reply:Thanks for the advice all.. I didn't see the last few till it was too late.  Got the adapter and went to town.  It wasn't pretty, but the 3/32 6013 seemed to work ok on  the 40 amp setting.  Inner rocker panel is on, moving on to the outer rocker panel.. that may take a few days though due to some commitments and the 4th.. Happy 4th to all!

Reply:Harbor freight wire machines only have a 6 foot lead for the mig gun, that almost certainly means that you had to use an extension cord. That welder is a transformer type machine & will require a decent sized cord, I wouldn't go any more than 25 feet and no less than a 12 gauge cord.
