What would cause my Hobart Champion 10000 to just fizz and leave little weld balls on the metal I strike? Doesn't matter what amps as if that part it broken. The generator works fine and puts out power, it just seems like the amps are way low. It will only scratch a strike and nothing more. The rod won't even get stuck even if I try. Thanks
Reply:Could be a couple things. However, as you have auxiliary AC power output, the field exciter circuit and components are all good.Check for DC open circuit voltage (OCV) at the weld output studs. Should be 73VDC +/-. If no or low OCV then the output rectifier (diodes) are suspect or it could be a poor connection somewhere from the weld stator output leads to the output studs. If there is full OCV at the weld output studs then the current transducer (LEM) that senses weld output and signals the control board may have failed or there is a poor connection in one of the plugs in its circuit. Check connections at the LEM and control board first. If you need help finding these components, review the parts break-down in the unit manual. If you don't have a manual, go here http://www.hobartwelders.com/service/owners-manuals/ to download the .pdf version of it. Have your unit SN to be sure to get the correct one.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110

Reply:Thanks I will check it out. I have to wonder if the problem I had with it a few months ago with it spiking up in amps is related problem.

Reply:Did you figure out what was wrong with your welder. Mine is doing the same thing. I have generator power but its welding as if its on lowest setting. A few weeks before it was welding at full power with no control. I replaced the potentiometer and still doing same thing. The volts at the posts are from 60 to 70.
Reply:My Welder was doing the exact same thing. I replaced the LEM and the F1 fuse holder and it started welding again. Before I got my new LEM and F1 fuse holder I used a fuse holder from radio shack and it started to weld just fine. I believe the prongs on my old F1 fuse holder weren't making good contact and it was giving me this symptom. Before replacing the LEM and Fuse holder I had no control from the potentiometer. |
