I know this unit is dead simple, but I'd love some opinions on a couple things. I bought the Ironman 230 kit with the DP-3545-20 spool gun a while back and have been having a great time with it on various steel projects and the spool gun was stored away, but now I have some aluminum I really need to weld. These are pretty small pieces, basically adding some tabs to something the size and shape of a small coffee mug, but everything is 1/4" thick and the tabs are only a few square inches, so they're going to heat up fast. All parts are 6061-T6.Here's what I have for wire:Lincoln Superglaze 4043 .030"Lincoln Superglaze 4043 .047 Lincoln Superglaze 5356 .035Lincoln Superglaze 5356 .047Doing some reading, it sounds like the 4043 is a little easier and I see they suggest pushing a 10-15 degree angle. I have a 100% Argon bottle and I think the recommended flow is 20-30cfm? The recommended settings on the 230 for steel are generally hot, or I'd say they're maybe fine if you're moving really fast. I assume the aluminum is the same? Use the recommended settings if you're going to get in and get out, or drop a tap and a few ipm if you like to work a little slower? And which wire would you use? Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Reply:practice indeed

a pre-heat with a gas flame helps a lot, it reduces that snottery start you usually get. As will tacking the very end properly, so the weld isn't running into the edges - they'll fall off.

Reply:If you have a friend with a tig machine call him ! you will be much happier with the results .
Reply:I was able to get something that looked okay and felt strong by hand, but yeah tig would be the way to go. I have an AlphaTig 200x, but it has thirty knobs on it that don't seem to do anything. I hate that thing.
