Have a 1975 f350 dually.360ci v8 with a 4 speed manual.2Wd with a Dana 70hd rear.Old gal wont shift into 3rd.No grinding or odd sounds.Just wont shift into 3rd even with the engine off.A.) How can i find out what trans this is?B.) Think its an adjustment issue or something broke?Miller Dynasty 200DXMiller Spectrum 250DMiller Millermatic 200Bunch of old blue dinosaurs....
Reply:Pull the cover off the tranny and look for a broken shift fork or guide rod. If something in the tranny is bad a NP435 is an easy rebuild.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally

Reply:A New Process 435 has an aluminum cover and the shifter pops out with a quarter turn of the retainer, a Borg Warner T18 is all cast iron and the shifter retainer needs to be unscrewed.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally

Reply:If it's a New Process good luck getting anything but gaskets and other minor parts for it.  Haven't been able to get parts for these in well over 10-15yrs.  MIght get junkyard stuff, or custom machined stuff, but that's it.  There's so called "rebuild " kits out there but the stuff is minimal (gaskets, bearings, synchros).  I retired my old 78 Powerwagon for this very reason, I can't justify pulling it hard when I can't get drivetrain parts should something break."Any day above ground is a good day"

Reply:I dont know for sure but it sounds like the 3rd gear synchro went out. I had the same problem in a 73 F150 4wd that had a funky xnsfr case that had no neutral. When I towed it, it burned out the synchro due to no splash lubrication when being towed and the engine off. What I mean is, when you tow it, the output shaft is spinning and lubed but without the engine turning, no front shaft lube.
Reply:BTW, I have factory manuals for 1973 that I think is the same as '75. If your interested , I can trade for consumables or gloves whatever.
Reply:If I remember correctly 3rd gear was located on the output shaft by a two piece retaining ring. These rings had a habit of breaking. this allows the gear to move out of position and not engage. This ring can be replaced without removing and dis assembling the trans. It is not easy job but it can be done. Remove the lid from the trans and check if 3rd gear moves on the output shaft. If you look closely you will see where the ring fits into the recess in the gear. As I said it can be replaced without trans removal.

Reply:Any of the old 4spd's they put in those trucks are pretty easy to tear down and rebuilt. The bigger challenge is actually picking the damn things up, their cast iron and heavy (the NP435 is really heavy, the others arent that bad). Parts are available as are reman units if you look around a bit. They are a very popular swaps for Jeeps and rock crawlers due to their being both very very strong and having a really low first gear.
