Reply:My wife's much older brother was smartest man in the world. Lest we forget, he announced it several times an evening. He shopped & shopped, finally found the cheapest crate motor. Well............the cheapest rebuilt motor. His was a 400 Chevy. I'd heard little about a 400, knew nothing of it. He found a high school class willing to install it in his dually van motor home. With less than 1000 miles on his "rebuilt" motor, it failed again. It then went off to a more expensive motor shop, where they started over. All 8 cylinders were bored to the same size. 8 new pistons were fitted, connecting rods were changed to have 8 that matched. The crank was ground, all bearings were replaced. The cam was dealt with, I don't know if new or ground. Timing was refreshed. Second time, he had a good engine. I never heard any bragging about how little he paid.An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.

Reply:There's plenty of garbage out there, a guy at work bought a reman for his Dodge van and the block had been welded. I still remember my stepdad shopping around for the cheapest price on a Buick V-6 for his station wagon, it was warranteed for a year and lasted just a tad over that. I got stuck replacing it, I think we ended up putting in a used one.Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.
Reply:Jack died a couple years ago. He has rebuilt several engines for me. When he finished an engine it was right, ready to use. He rejected several blocks because of some problem or other. I believe the most expensive one he ever did was $2400, that included him supplying the block. An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. Reply:Private shop rebuilds have gone up even more... price out the parts and you'll see why, but if you have a reputable shop, the results of a proper blueprint can also yield a better motor.250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes

Reply:If we sidetrack a thread, we do it in style. I loved the XKE. Four wheel independent suspension was not real typical on this side of the pond. Even if it didn't have inboard brakes, it would still have outperformed everything but corvette. That said, I still regret missing out on the XK120. I looked at it on a Sunday night. It was owned by the niece of an acquaintance, a beautiful college student. I agreed on the asking price of $1000 she wanted cash. I offered to return next morning, she wasn't available until 3:00 PM. I had to work, but sent my mother with cash. When she got there, a Cadillac Eldorado was waiting in the driveway.Several phone calls later, the bidding was was lost.An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. Reply:i Used to love browsing the goodwrench engines in the jegs catalog. It is a shame about the prices but to be fair $1800 for a crate motor was too sweet of a deal to last (I remember a $1600 4 bolt 350!).  Most shops would be about there for a rebuild, if not more.

Reply:pipeliner, looks like you got the evidence, for you time/pricing claim.      but, for '87-95 part #12681430 (2 bolt 5.7), what i said was fairly accurate time and price wise.     a yr to the month, i was quoted $3013, $3058 from gm dealers.      my long time gm guy told me his cost was $2712, and he'd sell it to me for $2812.      two yrs ago it was no more than 2 hundred less.    i know i can get it $150 or so, less on internet, but if something isnt right, i want a parts counter i can physically go to, not emailing someone on the other side of nation, so i pay the extra few bucks.   thanks for the thread, now i know i can still get a new 4 bolt for my older stuff    iLast edited by 123weld; 08-25-2020 at 07:21 PM.
